Black Albert was used in a new barrel aging project. More than a year ago, Carlo was able to get his hands on a stock of Four Roses Bourbon barrels, and we happily filled them up with Batch „0". This unique creation was originally to be named 4 Black Roses in honour of its heritage, but our friends in Kentucky strongly advised us not to do so! What to do? As the disowned offspring of Black Albert, the name Cuvée Delphine imposed itself. Savouring the Belgian irony, we are most honoured to have artwork by Delphine Boël shining on this label. You will not find this ale all over the globe. There is no export program, but we will try to provide stock through our web shop and some specialty beer pubs.

On draft at Angel's Trumpet. Amazing imperial stout. Pours deep black with no head. Taste is rich dark chocolate and dried cherries, even a little grapey. Very syrupy. Delicious if you can find it.

Draught at Lord Hobo, 4/6/14
Been wantin to try this one for a while, so it was nice to see.
Opaque black pour with a very dark tan head that is small and recedes very quickly to a ring.
Licorice, sweet graham cracker, dark chocolate and moderate roast in the nose is slow to emerge...Barrel character is similarly muted/reserved giving only a slight grainy/acidic/fruity character that could easily be taken as oxidation/extremely dark roastiness or earthy, bitter yeast in suspension. Fortunately, there’s no overarching malt heaviness and it seems like it’s well attenuated from the nose, as Black Albert is/was. Light alcohol apparency, no flaws, though some dullness/oxidation at this point. Not sure how old this keg is, but I’d have to guess at least 3 or 4 years if not more.
The flavor has a very pronounced note of earthy, somewhat astringent, initially dirty malt character. To be honest, I’m not 100% sure it’s malt-derived and initially took it as a light infection or just too much old yeast. As the beer warms and breathes, it actually reveals itself to be just incredibly tightly wrapped dark maltiness. Bitterness, light roast/tobacco and even some sweetness all seem to gain strength in the beer and even despite the very low carbonation and slightly loose/watery texture (for the style, the beer is not actually watery), it really begins to grow on me. I find almost the exact same note in the Black Berry Albert. Astringent, bitter, black but really well-suited to balancing the light chocolate sweetness. Alcohol very well-hidden in the flavor, especially considering the looser texture. Good stuff. Interesting to try an aged sample.

Pitch black pour, looks like black wine; no head. Sour fruity smoky blackberry aroma. Flavor is of berries, licorice, dark cherry and grapes. Very sweet. Flat. Meh.

Draft at Lord Hobo, was not very impressed with this. Watery black body. Big roastiness, dark chocolate, boozy. Very thin, ok flavor. Don’t get the huge ratings

Negro opaco con espuma beige. Aromas de maltas tostadas, licor y uvas pasas. Es densa y entra dulce y afrutada acabando con un agradable amargor seco y acafetado. Muy rica.

Bottle at home, courtesy of Eric. Big thanks man! Pour is deep black with a small tan head. Big raisins, figs, dark fruits, red grape, roast, marshmallow, graham crackers, vanilla, and coffee in the aroma. Taste is rich dark chocolate, dates, tangy, prunes, toasted bread, licorice, nutty, grapey, light wood, and earthy. Slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Pretty tasty belgian style stout.

At Stephen’s with Dave and Stephen. Aroma is fig roasted malt, raisin, smooth roasted malt. Taste is smooth chocolate malt, mellowed up big sugar notes. The age on this is beautiful and very tasty.

Had on tap at Lost Nation Saturday evening. Shared with jamesewelch. $3 for the 3 oz. serving. Pours a mahogany-tinted black; no head whatsoever. Syrupy and viscous. Aromas of soy sauce, booze, mashed bananas, cinnamon, vanilla beans, bourbon, and roasted pears. Tastes the same with the addition of brown sugar, young oak, bing cherries, black licorice candies, blackcurrants, raisins, white chocolate, and sugarplums. Slightly acidic by swallow. Dangerously drinkable.
