Yeah... got a sample of this at RBWG 2010 because of fata... and I couldn’t believe it - what a great guy! Wow. Awesome cherry and sour going on in this stuff. Just enough malt in there to balance it out. Really good, but you knew that.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draught at Pre-ZBF 2010. Pours murky red with a lasting pinkish head. Tart fruit with cherry leading the way. Oak and underlying bretty notes and flavour also shine. It’s really well rounded and extremely easy to drink. Perhaps just slightly oxidised now but nonetheless a great beer.

Big thanks to fata for bringing this to RBWG. Pours red-orange brown with a slight white head. Nose is tart fruit, cherry, vinegar, dust, some funk, and barrel. Flavor is similar with lingering vinegar and tart cherries/ fruit. Very tart, vinegar, and funky. Interestingly Belgian.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle… RBWG ‘10… Mostly clear, rose-colored ale with a small, fizzy, white head. Acetic, moderately funky, woody nose. Medium-bodied with a bit of a raspy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. The flavor is very fruity, tart, nutty and fairly well-balanced. Not nearly as sour or funky as I expected. I was really looking forward to this stuff bringing the pain and it didn’t. It obviously wasn’t supposed to. That’s what I get for reading commercial descriptions and looking at scores instead of reading actual ratings. Very tasty, though. Great beer. A Flanders red, I suppose. Big-time thanks to the guys at Struise, fata2683, growler and the other two generous folks who saved me pours of this stuff. I was two hours late and probably had more of this brew than anyone else. People rock!

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: JUL 5, 2011 Re-rate, July4th 2011 @ Struise. Side by side tasting, 1983 bottle brewed in 1978 and a 2005 bittle kindly of Urbain. A gem of high quality regardless of the age.
1983 bottle: old dusty bottle where the yeast had even started to eat away at the inside of the bottle.
Pours a nice copper color with a nice white head that shows how well this beer has aged.
Mellow aroma and sourness that has dissipated a bit leaving some place to a maltier profile still retaining some cherry goodness but coupled with what could be seen as candi sugar.
Mouthfeel has a light carbonation near minimal, some nice earthly dry notes, tartness has been eaten away byy the aging process and yeasts. Drinks like a nice cognac.
2005 bottle: color is immediately what struck me, a nice burgundy, deep cherry color, lightly opaque, which was a departue from the copperish 1983 version.
Musty notes with whole cherry goodness of kernel, pulp leaving ample tartness.
RBWG’10, cheers to Fata.
pours amber, few sporadic white bubbles.
aroma and flavors, vinegary / yeasty some sour notes up front along with fruits, light berry tartness, apple like note with some barrel/oak mouthfeel.
Interesting malty and grainy mouthfeel with a tart cherry/berry finish.
The whole sour/lactic aspect remain smooth and enjoyable for what I had anticipated would be an overly sour beer.
Too bad this one won’t be made again.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Draft; numerous samples @ pre-ZBF March 4&5, 2010. This beer has been on the top of my want list for almost 2 years, so when I learned that it would be available at pre-ZBF, making the trip became even more of a no-brainer.
Pours a hazy reddish pink color, topped with a modest sized pink white head. Aroma is quite musty, with notes of wood, wild yeast, and cherry. Flavor follows suit, with sour cherry taking the forefront, backed by oak, lemon, earth, and musty notes. Cherry and oak provide a long finish. Subtle and complex. This beer is right up my alley. I hope to try it again.
