COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Starting with a Lambic grist bill composed of 70% barley malt and 30% unmalted wheat. No yeast was artificially added to the wort, but was exposed for two days to the open air in one of our plastic tunnels at the Noordhoek Ostrich Farm. First fermentation took place in second hand sherry oak casks for six weeks. 200 grams of Northern cherries per litre and the Roeseleire yeast strain were added after six months, provoking a new fermentation process. Eight months later, we pumped over the young ale to oak casks and let it mature for another 3 years. This project was realized after a tasting of the same recipe Urbain once made 20 years ago and was barrel aging in his garage in De Panne eversince and while he was in Africa and forgot all about it. As this is a very limited version, this ale will not be suitable for export but rather for sale at the farm when available.

Thanks Alex for bringing this bad boy, another of the whitest whales. This blend is 90% 1983, 10% 2005. Pours a clear to hazy light red in color. Nose is exceptionally funky, very musty, basement, cob web, and some cherry. As it warms, i notice a little more oude bruin character to it. Taste is less focused on the funk and more cherry forward...very nice beer. Mouthfeel is light, gentle carbonation, and a moderate to long finish. Incredible beer, thought this might be another product of hype, but holy shit is it good. Probably one of the best beers I’ve had to date.

Struise’ attempt at a cherry lambic with spontaneous fermentation to which cultivated yeast was later added, macerated with cherries and matured on oak. Very limited and no longer available. Quickly dissolving, off-white foam, colour a coppery brownish red, murky. Aroma strongly dominated by real cherries, like a ’real’ cherry lambic but less funky and more ’clean’, sherry clearly noticeable, caramel, walnuts; extremely fruity taste of genuine sour cherries, almost overwhelming, lambic-lice acidity, complex, hay, woodiness, long finish, sourish and reminiscent of a very dry sherry. For a random attempt at getting as close to the real thing from the Zenne valley, the Struise Brouwers did a great job - whether by coincidence or not.

Sampled from tap at Haandøl 2013. Muddy yellow-orange body with a tan colored rim. Honey, prunes and alcohol on the nose. Dates, figs, bourbon, over-ripe tangerine and a subtle bitterness. Full bodied, thick mouth, long finish.

Backlog. On tap @ BBF 2009. Pink to red color, murky. Big pinkish head, with a remaining layer. Aroma’s: cherries, almonds, a bit dusty, sour, sweet. Flavor is medium sour, cherries, medium sweet. Light bodied. Finishes somewhat dry. Pretty authentic lambic from non-lambic country.

Vintage 1983 bottle shared by MatSciGuy, thanks Levi! (Notes from back in October at Matty and Marks Bar) Pours a deep red that I’d call cherry based on the pour and glass. No head or carbonation at all. (It is 30 years old, give it a break.) Aroma is cherry, vanilla, slight gym sock, wine grape and some odd laundry basket. Taste is muted on many levels but I’ve never had a beer this old prior to this so I can’t say as it was this beers fault. More cherry, funk, sourness is mild at best and the funk is just slightly more.

Review from notes, sample from an auction bottle opened at Ebeneezer’s summer 2010, thanks for the opportunity Chris! Pours a lightly hazed light red color with a smallish pink and white head that dissipates quickly. Smells of cherry pie, leather, funk, a bit of lemon and raspberry with a hint of acetic. The flavor is tart with a nice fruity edge to it. Lemons cherries and raspberries meld nicely with a hint of vinegar some leather, oak, and funk. Medium body with a light level of carbonation and a tart puckering mouthfeel. Very nice kriek, it seems to have held up very nicely.

Bottle. Shared by Levi, thanks! Original 1983 vintage. Pours a rosy red opaque color with no head to speak of. Didn’t realy expect any head really though from a 30 year old beer. Cherry pie like aroma; cherry, vanilla, caramel, slight funk, apple and grape. Lots going on in the nose. The flavor is mirrored by the aroma; sweet cherry and fruit notes with some overarching funk to it. Not as funky or sour as I would have expected. Balanced. Overall, am I impressed by this? Yes and no. Yes in terms of how this has held up and the overall experience of getting to drink this. No in the fact that if this was a "new" beer I would have been a little let down. Some carbonation would have been nice. Medium mouthfeel. I find myself saying that I could drink this all day.

Bottle generously shared by MatSciGuy! Clear light cherry colored pour, small ring of carbonation and a slightly sweet berry aroma. Flavor is also sweet berries, very little tartness, very thin body and finished like a slightly subdued cherry jolly rancher. Very nice beer, thanks for sharing this Levi!

On tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. 1983 vintage. An unclear, orange-golden beer topped by a minimal-sized off-white head. Rather oxidized aroma with berries and sourness. Caramel notes too. The flavor too is rather oxidized, with caramel notes, some berries and a pleasant sourness. Medium body, dry and tart, finishing with sourness and oxidation. Trying to look behind the oxidation, I find a beer that was probably very nice some years ago. In this state it’s not very good, even for me who often think some oxidation is nice. Maybe I shouldn’t have rated it, but my ticker-brain can’t resist. 120511
