Menno from the Molen Brewery asked us to brew our approach of his beer "Vuur & Vlam", this for the occasion of his 2nd Borefts Beer Festival, which will be held next September 24 & 25th, in Bodegraven, Netherlands.

Note: Newest batch is dry-hopped with Cascade whereas earlier batches were dry-hopped with Amarillo.

I have the Cascade dry-hopped edition here. A slow gusher. Pours a hazy brownish amber with a thick off white head. Aromas of pine, resin, citrus, bit of malt, and bit of bread. Pronounced bitter, little sweet, but finish is also a strong, abrupt, dry bitter. Carbonation is a bit over active, may be characterizing the bitterness as a bit one-note. Good body. Hope the carbonation in this one is abnormal.

(Bottle) Amber colour, slightly hazy, with frothy beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of apricots, marmalade, orange peel, caramel and hints of black-currant. Fruity, malty nose with grapefruit, Seville orange, citrus peel, caramel, dried apricots resin and a generous citric/resinous bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Generous, but nicely balanced hop presence, backed up by a soft and rounded malt profile. Excellent IPA.

Bottle from Bierkoning, BB 12/15. How’s this is even possible for an IPA, god only knows. Murky brown copper pour with over-abundant loose frothy white head (slow gusher out of the bottle). Aroma of muddled vegetal hops, light fruity notes, mainly pear, belgian malt, kind of desserty/perfumy. Taste is hoppy, bitter, with a distinct belgian malty flavor to it, kind of cake-y. Not bad, but not really my style.

This 33cl bottled seemed to be hanging around my stash awaiting chilling for ages, but it’s BBD is 04/2015, so maybe I haven’t had it as long as I thought: anyway it was opened and poured into a La Chouffe glass on 16th Nov 2013. A deep and heavy head of beige foam sat on top of the reddy brown body, hazy, but not murky in looks. The nose was excited by the various esters it picked up: a pink grapefruit marmalade with malty molasses lashed with old hop plants and Belgian yeast left overs seemed to be the final smell I got. The taste wasn’t as hoppy as I expected, this has a large malt content that prevents the hops taking over completely, some caramel and toffee apple notes help the blend give a very pleasant brew with a substantial alcohol kick that arrives nicely towards the end of each sip. Different and interesting: a fine beer and one I’d happily have again.

Piekny zapach Amarillo amerykanskiego aromatycznego chmielu. Udana wspolpraca Struisse z De Mollenem. Polecam

Bottle - Sweet grapefruit and a bit of fresh pine. Cloudy brown orange with a foamy beige head. Brown sugar, malty and yeast with no sign of an IPA. Typical for De Struise but nothing that I expected.
