Waouuuuuuuuuuuuuhhh. Une bière vieillie en fut de porto, et par les Struise Brouwers, on ne va pas s’ennuyer en perspective.... Choisissez en principe une belle soirée d’hiver (en janvier par exemple), et un bon livre, installez-vous, toutes pantoufles dehors, et examinez d’abord cette merveille de bouteille avec tous ses blasons en cercle … la classe. Le fond de l’étiquette est noir, et le liquide merveilleux dans la bouteille est noir aussi et vous attend on ne peut plus calmement. Petit « détail » supplémentaire sur l’étiquette : 11,5 % abv. Si pas sérieux, s’abstenir.... On débouche … religieusement . Quasiment pas de gaz, très bien. On place déjà un nez curieux au-dessus de la bouteille pour percevoir un porto de la meilleure veine, c’est superbe... On verse … soigneusement (dans un verre calice, ou bien je joue à Eastwood pour quelques dollars de plus ….). Le miracle que cette couleur noire d’encre, comme de l’encre de Chine. OUI, Monsieur, le noir est une couleur. Si vous ne le savez pas encore, versez-vous une Kabert, et vous serez convaincu... Le noir « absolu ». Pour la clarté, on a le revers de la médaille : c’est l’opaque « absolu »... Donc pour les bulles, à moins de plonger dedans avec un scaphandre (je vais demander une livraison de 150 litres aux Struise), je ne peux point vous le dire... OUI, Monsieur, on ne voit pas les bulles ! (mais on peut très bien voir des éléphants roses, c’est possible, ou des lapins qui regardent leur montre...). Les arômes, aaaaaaahhh, les arômes, du moka, du pain d’épices (c’est belge, comme la bière...), une pointe de cassis, de groseilles noires et de porto (mais pour le porto, c’est surtout vrai du nez au-dessus de la bouteille, surtout faites-le, c’est remarquable). La texture de la première gorgée est soyeuse, énorme, une vraie bouche pleine. La 1ère saveur est un énorme concentré de café et chocolat noir. C’est superbe et quasi mystique. L’arrière-bouche est avec des fruits noirs, quasi en confiture. La 2ème bouche vous livre encore le moka et les fruits noirs, mais avec du porto du fût et des pruneaux. Quelle générosité. La 3ème bouche est sur le vin de porto et le vieux porto vintage, avec une arrière-bouche révélatrice de grand alcool de fût. La longueur est exceptionnelle, poignante, construite, pleine, complexe. L’alcool est tout à fait progressif et sans aucun excès pour ses 11,5 abv, preuve d’une très grande bière, superbement élaborée. La levure est précise, à la fois fine et massive. Comme disent les Struise, lots of yeast... La finale est prodigieuse... Comment vous expliquer... évidemment je vais mettre un 5 bien entendu, mais le comble, c’est que je sois le premier à le faire pour cette bière sublime !!!!!! (La seule explication c’est que vous m’avez fait ce cadeau pour ma 150ème critique, comme j’avais eu le cadeau pour la 1ère d’ailleurs …). Merci.... les Struise.

Bottle thanks to boutip. Pours pitch black with generous frothy brown head atop, very pretty. Aroma is really enchanting, I recognized at first the dark belgian malts that I get in Black Albert and those were immediately followed by aromatic but mellow port notes, plums, rich chocolate, just great. Taste was, as impossible as it may sound, even better. Rich and smooth, light port notes, chocolate, molasses, the barrel aging really seems to have rounded out this beer. Pretty amazing. The palate was rich and full but really well carbed, belgian style. Awesome.

What a great beer. Black body with a circle head. Port comes through in the nsoe and the taste. What a great blend. So smooth

33 cl. bottle @ home / purchased @ Sruise store in Bruges: black with a real mocha, coffee head, that is one lovely head / smells like chocolate, mocha, barrel, porto, touch berries / taste is very creamy, plenty of vanilla mocha, chocolate, ice-cream, dark fruits, followed by barrel, porto, touch porto, hint sour berries / excellent basebeer or just “beer” because this is close to BD XI in terms of deliciousness, this is a lovely beer, could use more love

Forgetfu with another incredible hookup. Black pour, chocolate brown head. Aroma is chalky, ashy, sweet molasses, port wine. Flavor is nice and full, oily, port, chocolate, molasses, licorice. This is awesome.

Bottle in train, Belgium - Going from ACBF 2012. Pitch black - nice brown head. Burned. Dry burned. Berries. Carcoal. Fruity. Port wine. Oakey. Wooden. Tarmac notes. Nice hoppy. Lovely.

05/12 0.33 l bottle @Animal, Madrid, shared with teddybeer. It poured pitch black body with bigger brown head. Very nice chocolate, coffee, wood, bourbon and dark fruit aroma. Flavor was somewhere between bitter and sweet, offered whole palette of dark malts; chocolate, licorice, caramel, coffee just being the most prominent ones. Full in body, but with high drinkability, creamy on palate. Long, tasty finish reflected flavor with only a bit of alcohol warming. At the place I could only describe it as wonderful! Didn’t have the opportunity to try Kate the Great, but will try better now! Congratulations, both brewers.

Bottle muled by GT2- thanks! Uber black pour with a vivacious creamy tan head that provides excellent lace and demonstrates excellent retention. The nose is quite phenomenal- massive vinous and dark fruit notes swirl together with notes of creamy mocha, milk chocolate, cocoa nib, and caramel nougat. A hint of woody barrel and alcohol as she warms. The port character is undeniable. The flavor is a bit of a ride- quite boozy with chocolate latte, mousse, vinous port, and coffee truffle. The palate is extremely silky and rich with fine bubble carbonation and a velvety texture. Sweet smacking port like finish. Awesome stuff.

Bottle, huge thanks to GT2 for muling this sucker for oteyj and I! Pitch black pour with a gorgeous thick tan head. Nose holds beautiful vinous port, malbec, and cabernet red wine notes, along with lovely touches of cocoa nib, amaretto or Chambord filled truffle, and beautiful complex chocolate. Flavor begins ultra clean for an 11% imperial stout, with more of that liqueur, port, sherry, oak, black cherry, vibrant red plum, and beautiful fig presence. Just an incredible manifestation of sweet, vinous notes. I think this had to be the sweeter, quad-like version of Black Albert because a mixture of the roastier version with the already roasty Kate the Great would have fought through the port barreling somewhat; nonetheless, I love this stuff. Shocked at the low ratings thus far.
