Commercial Description:
RateBeer Special Release:
Behold the second of RateBeer.com’s Worldwide Masters Series! This request edition ale is the crafted alchemy of a party of some of Europe’s finest brewers, Mikkel Bjergsø and Kristian Keller of Mikkeller (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Urbain Coutteau, Carlo Grootaert, Phil Driessens, and Peter Braem of De Struise Brouwers (Woesten-Vleteren, Belgium).
Both breweries have attracted considerable international attention for their artful interpretations of traditional ale styles enlived by a rich sense of invention. And both are also very highly esteemed by the RateBeer.com international community of beer tasters. We hope you enjoy this unique little treasure.
Struise Mikkeller -- the product of master brewing and friendship. Celebrate this sense of camaraderie by sharing this bottle with your good friends!
- Joe Tucker, RateBeer.com

Struise-Mikkeller is as we said in the past "Best of two worlds". We delivered an IPA with 130 IBU, but a bitterness hidden the Struise way, counter balanced by maltyness, alcohol and rest sugars. People who do not like Ipa's will actually be amazed, the general hop bomb addict will not understand, so yes this is a controverse brew... enjoy anyway!

Bottle sample shared by MDS, thanks Mike! This one poured a hazy and almost milky looking deep straw colour. The head was a massive billowing mass which depleted to leave lots of lace and about half an inch of sediment in my glass. This brew supports a fresh zesty, yeasty faint citrus nose with compliments of grass, leafy hops and wood. Its also spicy and funky a la Orval. The beer showed flavours of funky, spicy yeast with a fresh dose of hops. After this, followed a blast of lemon zest and grapefruit bitterness which was like a blast in the throat. Quite sessionable at 9%. It’s almost as if I could pour a bottle of this even if it was 14% and drink it not know how strong it was.......but I digress. Another fantastic brew shared by MDS! Thanks Mike!

Aroma: wonderful. Powerful fruity hops, apple peel, honey, vaguely of pine, caramel malt, grapefruit, wheat? Somehow dirty. Fusel alcohols?
Comes off about as expected.
Flavour: bittersweet. Surprisingly roasted. Less sourish than I expected from the scent. Yet w/ a very nice, almost lactic, sourishness. Grapefruit bitter hops. Fruity, very yeasty, dry aftertaste.
Palate: fizzy, creamy, thick, yeasty. Quite slimy.
Appearance: murky light orange with yellow tint. White, fine, irregular head. Leaving classy lacing...

Bottled. Pours a cloudy orange brown color, thick creamy head. Aroma of yeast, slight sourness, slight hop, some fruit like orange, pineapple and citrus. Taste is not as bitter as I expected by the style. But more like a fruity sirupy triple, though with a soft bitter hop background.

Pour is strange, almost looks red at first, then I realized it was amber. Aroma of sweet citrus, sour candy, pineapple and apple. The taste is subtle grapefruit with a subtle hop bite. This double IPA is different from the american standards, and it’s all the more apparent that european breweries can’t offer the same type of hop complexities that American breweries can. However, this is still a great ale.

11.2 oz bottle. Citrus and definite hops on the nose. Carries through to the flavor as well with some spicy Belgian stuff going on as well. Nice combination of flavors. I liked it.

Bottle shared with yalnimim (courtesy of Papsoe), in NZ, poured amber with a large pillowy head. A punchy aroma with plenty of alcohol, malt that is both caramalised and juicy. Alcohol is very strong in the mouth, with a mouthfeel you can just about chew. Flavours of molasses and orange, as well as spicy. Comes up well, but would struggle to drink more than one of these.
