Commercial Description:
RateBeer Special Release:
Behold the second of RateBeer.com’s Worldwide Masters Series! This request edition ale is the crafted alchemy of a party of some of Europe’s finest brewers, Mikkel Bjergsø and Kristian Keller of Mikkeller (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Urbain Coutteau, Carlo Grootaert, Phil Driessens, and Peter Braem of De Struise Brouwers (Woesten-Vleteren, Belgium).
Both breweries have attracted considerable international attention for their artful interpretations of traditional ale styles enlived by a rich sense of invention. And both are also very highly esteemed by the RateBeer.com international community of beer tasters. We hope you enjoy this unique little treasure.
Struise Mikkeller -- the product of master brewing and friendship. Celebrate this sense of camaraderie by sharing this bottle with your good friends!
- Joe Tucker, RateBeer.com

Struise-Mikkeller is as we said in the past "Best of two worlds". We delivered an IPA with 130 IBU, but a bitterness hidden the Struise way, counter balanced by maltyness, alcohol and rest sugars. People who do not like Ipa's will actually be amazed, the general hop bomb addict will not understand, so yes this is a controverse brew... enjoy anyway!

Semi-cloudy light copper beer, with a soapy, lasting head - wonderfully peppery, earthy hop aroma, with some lovely floral components underneath, as well as some soft honey sweetness, bright citrus, apple and peach, and a light tartness - full but soft carbonation in the mouth - hops are quite strong up front, creating a peppery, spicy character that last throughout - this is followed but just enough candi sugar sweetness to balance it out - a lot of herbal notes, leafy, earthy character - mellow undercurrents of grain and oats - the overall impression is of an american IPA, crossbred with a belgian ale and a british barleywine - and somehow it all works quite well - very nice.

Pours a murky orange with white head. Very sweet with caramel, candy sugar, orange peel, malt, earthiness, grapefruit, and bitter hops, but the bitterness is very muted by the large amount of sweet malt. Complex and spiced, yet not to the style (at least it is very different then the american style).

Nice amber orange pour with a 2 finger white head that keeps up nicely and leaves some good lacing. Candied orange sweetness in the aroma with some sharp hops trying to fight their way through. Kind of an odd combo, but interesting. This candied orange sweetness comes through in the taste as well with an interesting ginger sort of spiciness. Lots of sweetness, only barely mellowed by some sharp but muted hops. Citrus. Alcohol presence at the end, finished by a light bitterness. Mouthfeel is rather rich (and slightly cloying) with a decent finish and medium carbonation. Overall, interesting, but conflicting. The flavors never seem to come together, but rather seem to like picking fights amongst themselves. Still, a rather interesting beer to try, and one that borders on being quite good.

sampled with the phoenix crew. bottle provided by psprings... pours a hazy orange/copper with a white head and tons of spotty lacing. aroma is floral yeasty, dry twiggy/wood, spicy earthy hops, lots of grainy sweetness and fruit... maybe orange. the palate is a bit sweet and certainly covers up a lot of the character. my usual ’130 ibu, what’s the point?’... sweet graininess, pine needles, grass, citrus, floral yeast and wood. it finishes with a light bite from the hops as the alcohol vapors come out a bit. medium body. smooth. meh.
