Ole_R (1195), Oslo, Norway Jun 8, 2008 330 ml bottle, courtsey of yngwie. Small beige head rapidily reduced to ring of foam. Dark mahogny, low carbonatied body. Aroma has a vinous charachter, dark tinned fruits, toffee, and a scent of alcohol. Notes of yeast and cellar. Taste is light sourish malts, a plummy fruitiness, and a note of brown sugar and spices. Full-bodied. Malty, spicy, sugary finish. Reliable and tasty, but not outstanding.
MuttyD (71), Cambridge, USA Sep 6, 2008 Dark brown/red pour with tan head. Aroma is of yeast, sugar, bubblegum, dried fruits. Flavor is of the same. Fizzy on the palate and very full bodied. After taste is tangy and fruity and lingers. Simply amazing brew. GAManiac (297), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Sep 5, 2008 Pours dark brown out of the bottle and settles into a dark mahogany in the glass. The head is fluffy and off-white and dissipates fairly quickly to a ring with good lacing. The aroma is sweet with dark fruit, plums and raisins, and a bit of candied sugar and roasted malts. There are some spices in the aroma but very faint. The taste is a little less complex than the original version with a little less spiciness and a heavy dose of grape sweetness. There’s a little bit of cola flavor in there as well on top of a roasted malt base with some caramel tones. The mourhfeel is medium bodied with a little less carbonation than the original. There is a little less sour kick on this one and, for me, leads to a slightly more drinkable beer. Either way, this is a slight notch below the original but a great beer on its own. SHIG (1515), Oberoffligen, Germany Aug 31, 2008 Bottle: Poured a brown to black color with a medium tan to beige head. The aroma is dark fruit, bubble gum, and some sugar. Taste is more of that dark fruit possibly raisin, with some sugar. Finish is dry and tingly. This lives up to the Struise hype for me! Trev (504), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Aug 31, 2008 pours a brownish amber with a thin tan head.
Aroma is enticingly sweet. Candy and brown sugar. medium malt, some dark fruit tones.
Flavour is a little lighter than I expected. Very well balanced. Initially sweet malt, some raisin and dark fruit tones. slight alc bitterness through the middle. Finishes very smooth.
k4df4l (141), DTown, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 30, 2008 Bottle pours a deep brown with a thin beige foam that falls immediately to a skim of fine bubbles around the rim of the glass. Aroma of dark fruit, sweet malt, raisin, brown sugar with an earthy & spicy element. Flavor is initially rather intense brown sugary sweetness with more dark fruit, figs and raisins. As that fades, dates & plums with a very faint wisp of alcohol and a very light tangy sensation like grape/apple skins. Finishes clean with a moderately thin palate and lightly carbonated.
