Poured a watery looking dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of soft malt and alcohol infused dark fruits. Smooth, medium to full body, flavour of dark fruits and some caramel malt, some vsanilla smoothness with a slight bittersweet toffee aftertaste.

Pours from the bottle with a warm chestnut brown color with quite a number of floating specks of sediment entrained therein, and a big, foamy beige head on top. The aroma is sadly a bit muted, but it does convey some nice notes of dark brown sugar and dried grains. The flavor is certainly more assertive, with moderately rich, dry toffee-like sweetness, some mild floral and dried herb characteristics, and some slightly tangy yeast. The medium body and light, fine carbonation do a very nice job lightening the profile without taking away substance. Overall, this lacks the same dry, fruity depth of the best in this class, but it is mouth-pleasing and quite a bit more drinkable than it’s 10% ABV would suggest.

So awesome~ this is right up there with the best of them. Definitely liked this one as much as the grand reserva, maybe more. But this is a 2008 bottle and the grand was drunk a year ago or so. Anyway, aroma is alco-esters, wet dough, spice, anise, caramel. Appearance is dark brown with red hues shining in the light, thin froth, good legs. Taste is bready, rich malty toasty cereal, and very smooth great mouthfeel. Palate is warm, with a good mix of hop and spice to calm down the abv, its hidden well but there. I really highly recommend this and any other Struisse beers!

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2013 33cl bottle (2009). Pours deep mahogany with thin off-white head and plenty of lacing throughout. Aroma is oak, deep dark fruit, sherry, lightly sweet vanilla pod, vinous notes. Taste is full and beautifully balanced: wonderful dark fruits mix effortlessly with the oaked tones - great depth. Light vanilla notes, yeast complexity, bready malt, light caramel. All comes together impeccably. Mouthfeel is full and silky smooth. No hint of alcohol heat. Nice residual woodiness and dark fruit notes. This is a tremendous strong ale, absolutely impeccable.

2009 Bottle, so 3 years old approximately. Drank next to a 2005 Grand Reserva and 2011 regular Pannepot.
It pours a deep clear brown with reddish tinge. The initial tan head gives quickly. The aroma is a rich sweet bread and yeast with very ripe dark fruit and a little nice oxidation. It’s just a little more hot and full with fruit esters than the PGR and much richer than the standard. The aromas just keeps going and pulls you in. Flavor is the same with a some spice like cinnamon and clove taking hold in the middle and somewhat woody bitter end. It’s moderately sweet but in incredible balance with. It’s just a little less heavy, rich, and warm than the PGR, must be the calvados and age. The PGR at 7 years is less lively and has a dead yeast character (not off putting in the slightest). This one is very luxurious with a lively creamy mouthfeel and warming, woody end. This is a masterpiece to say the least. It’s drinking perfectly right now. If I had to guess 7 years is getting past the peak of the PGR, thought it is still awesome.

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2013 Vintage 2009 - Mild taste with a touch of coffee. Malty taste with light subtle bitterness. smell has a touch of red cabbage. Dark, black color with minimal brown hat. Aftertaste lasts long, has a touch of dryness like red wine. It isn’t quitte as full bodied as the original though, I think.
