The Pannepot Reserva was an idea from my brew colleague Carlo who wanted to age Pannepot in genuine French oak barrels (barrique 225 liters). We have brewed 90HL at the end of 2005 which has been aging on oak ever since (14 months). 30 Hl was bottled Tuesday 8th May 2007. 60Hl has been transferred now to second hand calvados oak vessels and will be bottled again early autumn 2007, we will name that batch Pannepot Grand Reserva. As quality and results rule at Struise, the Reserva was already brewed again and aging on oak.

Bottle pours muddly dark brown color with off white head. Aroma is awesome. Ripe dark fruit, butterscotch, toffee, caramel, and a stickly sweetness that seems to linger. This stuff smells so good I couldn’t stop smelling it. Just awesome. Prickly carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors follow the nose. Upfront has the caramel and toffee sweetness. Its not cloying. The middle has dark fruit notes, and it finishes with a alcoholic hot bite. This was a great beer from start to finish. Outstanding.

Big sweetish belgian strong ale aroma, malty, a bit of wininess, some burnt raisins. Dark, very little head. Lighter in the mouth than expected, there’s a gentle tingle of carbonation, but then a lovely barrique-influenced flemmish red sourness, pops out and puts a smile on your face. Balance between the heavy and the light, the malt and the lis, the sweet and the sharp, is just right. Doesn’t show its strength either, so a bonus point for that. This is my kind of beer.

Keg @The Salt Horse, Edinburgh. [Rating Backlog:Aug 2016] Pours brown with a red tinge. beige head which went quite quick. Nose is wonderful, Christmas cake, cloves, spices (mixed), big cinnamon, fruity, prunes plums, raisins, amazing nose. Taste is caramel, vanilla, spicy but not as much as the nose, sweet fruits, candi sugar taste, this is great. Wife had some and then bought some for herself.

Pours a deep brownish black from the bottle with thin ring of bubbly tan head. Aroma of faint oaky vanilla and big booze, hint of dark fruit. Taste is almost like a barrel aged stout with hints of dark fruit and Belgian yeast. Really nice.

Liquid is black as night, large, brown head. Light peaty aroma of malt. Medium body, little bit carbonation. Taste is sweet, chocolate.

Night_Cap (119) - Southern Highlands, AUSTRALIA - SEP 20, 2016
Bottle 330ml (2012) – cellared for 4 years. Served at room temperature. Pours a dark, murky brown with a ruby tint. Head is small, tanned and average lasting. Aroma is strong and complex with notes of aged red wine; toasted wholemeal bread, dried currants, dried cranberries, blueberries, old wine barrels, cooked brown sugar, aniseed, 5 spice powder, pouch tobacco, and dried leaves. Flavour is immensely complex, smooth, and very vinous; aged red wine (strong), blueberry toast (strong), tart blackberries (strong), blackcurrants (strong), dried cranberries, toasted caramel, Belgian candy sugar, old wine barrels (strong), anise, dried leaves and a oak tannins in the finish. Full bodied with soft carbonation, an oily texture and an ambrosial finish. ABV is extremely well hidden. Easily one of the most complex and refined beers I have had to pleasure to taste.

Aroma: sweet dark ripe berries, prunes and cherries. Flavour: full dark fruity sweetness with notes of oak. A port like quality with a dry bitter finish and a warm fruity mouthfeel. Colour: very dark reddish brown with a reddish brown fading head. From: Bottle, bottled 2012, sampled Sept. 2016.

Bottled: Oct. 2012, Sampled: 8/30/2016. Opaque, dark brown with a thin caramel head. Aromas of dried fruits (plums, dates, figs), caramel, herbs/spices, toasted bread, and honey. Arrives on palate with subtle dried dark fruits and caramel; develops a vinous, slightly tart, herbaceous, earthy middle and then moves into a finish of dark+milk chocolate blend & licorice. As it warms, the fruits and chocolates take center stage while still giving the wine notes some space at the end. Medium to light body with soft carbonation; quite lively for an old bottle! Smooth and rich in flavors while maintaining a balanced palate; excellent level of complexity throughout. Alcohol is very well hidden over its long glass life. Its tart middle shows off a lot of the French oak influence. Overall a pleasure to drink. This is a beautiful beer that achieves a nice blend of Belgian strong dark ales and French red wines.

Bottle. Reserva 2010. Dark brown with a beige persistent head. Aroma is complex, with notes of raisins fruit, spices, molasses, chocolate, toffee, caramel and roasted malts. Taste follows the same. Very well balanced. Less vinous than the standard Pannepot and even better than that.

2012. Aromat: Bardzo silne nuty beczkowe, waniliny, drewno, trochę przypraw, delikatne skojarzenia z winem + aromat cukru trzcinowego z butelki, który wprost zniewala. Wygląd: Ciemne, z momentalnie opadającą pianą redukowaną do zera. Smak: Analogicznie do aromatu (zwłaszcza beczka), lecz nasze kubki smakowe mogą doświadczyć dodatkowo smaku dojrzałych owoców (śliwki, morele, nawet figi), likieru (wiśniowego?) oraz wspaniałego, długiego finiszu spod znaku cukru trzcinowego. Alkohol ułożony jest wręcz perfekcyjnie, ujawnia się tylko po ogrzaniu pod postacią przyjemnego rozgrzewania w przełyku. Piwo zdecydowanie warte każdej złotówki.
