COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

btl. 33 cl. 2010: Fine cocoa coloured head and a deep brown colour. Nose is fat and tight with some licuorice (like the Rufnuf) as well as some unevolved sugar/fruit/caramel. Intriguing and a nose that you just want to keep on sniffing to, whilst watching it evolve. Semi full body and length. A bit dissapointing, but it may be due the the young age of the beer. Taste is again licorice with butterscotch and chocolate. Really pleasant, but again it seem to hide something away for the future.. I may have to find one more to hide away for a few more years.

Brilliant beer. Pours a dark reddish brown with a fairly small tan head. Smells of bitter orange, brown sugar, malt, belgian yeast and quite a lot of alcohol. That alcohol carries through and dominates the taste which is very sweet. There’s a bit of bitterness as well and the bitter orange really carries through. There’s a very a long and balanced finish carrying all of this through. Body is fairly light, with medium carbonation. All in all, a very complete beer.

Bottle vintage 2010. Poured deep, dark brown with small tan head. Very richly sweet with spices and lots of malty sweetness and alcohol.

On tap at Armsby Abbey, served in a tulip. Pours dark, reddish brown with a thin, dense tan head. Delicious aroma of sweet caramel, toffee, dark fruits, cinnamon and brown sugar. Smells quite amazing. Flavor is initially sweet, but boozy, then the fruit aspects kick in followed by the cinnamon. Tastes as good as it smells. Moderate palate with active carbonation. There’s a bit of heat to it. Very nice.

’10 bottle. Pours a dark, muddy brown with a thick tan head and steady carbonation. Aroma is leather, candied sugar, raisin, date, sweet malt, cinnamon/sugar spice, and perhaps a little black pepper. Oh wow - taste is a thick melange of dark raisin, pepper, candied sugar, sweet cinnamon spice, and a whisp of alcohol heat. Smooth feel in the mouth. Just an absolutely outstanding beer in every way - I need to check back in with my local and clean out any bottles they may have remaining.

11.2oz bottle in a Trappist glass. 2007 bottle purchased in 2008 drank in 2011. Pours deep brown with a thick, lacy, light tan head. Aroma of spicy yeast, a little chocolate and dark fruits, floral hops, and some alcohol. Flavor and texture almost like wine. An amazing beer that I wish I could have more of.

Great beer, one of the best I’ve ever had. Poured beautifully even straight out of the fridge. Deep, dark brown with a nice, thick white foam. Dense sweet, somewhat roasty malty nose. The flavors are intense: Loads of overripe and dried fruit, with bananas, cloves, roasted barley, and hops. My only complaint: the finish is too bitter. I’d prefer a sweeter, rounder finish in this decadent beer.

Pours a hazy deep brown with a creamy beige head, which leaves a thin film behind. Smell of dried fruits and alcohol. Syrupy mouthfeeled brew with a complex, dried fruity aroma with raisins, chocolate, caramel underpainted by spices and alcohol, which is moderately biting the tongue. It finishes long and dry escorted by alcohol, citrusses, spices and bitterchocolate, leaves at last a sweet-tart aftertaste behind. Delicious one.
