COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Bottle given to me by phaleslu. Thanks Peter! Pours reddish brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is sweet malts, dark fruits and a hint of chocolate. Flavor is lots of dark fruit, malts and booze. Has a pretty strong alcohol flavor in the after taste.

2010. Dark brown beer with a reddish shine. Tan head, not too big but good retention. Spicy yeast aroma, dark and burned malts. Some thyme, liquorice, dark fruits, coffee and chocolate. Alcohol is noticable but not overly agressive. Good complexity and balance. Slight metal note though. Flavour sweetish malts, full boddied, almost thick and oily. More coffee, milk chocolate, spices (cinnamon, vanilla, cardemom). Only slight bitterness in the background. Quite long finish. Nice and balanced. Really quite good.

Very dark brown, can’t see through it at all, but it’s just not quite "black"...dark brown will do. Nice creamy tan head. Wonderful strong Belgian aroma of caramelized figs, some raisins, plums, brown sugar, maybe a bit of clove or nutmeg, not sure...Very aromatic, sweet, fruity and dark. Texture is perfect, the best combination of subtle carbonation and velvety mouthfeel. The taste is great, but leaves a little something to be desired. Lots of dark fruit like from the nose, like plum and raisin, with a small boozy kick at the aftertaste. Slight caramel graininess at the middle. Great flavor, not terribly complex though. Good, but not shut-your-mouth good.

0,33 l. bottle, 2009 "vintage". Nearly opaque, chestnut-brown colour in my trappist glass with a medium, tanned head that fades quickly. Very spicy, complex aroma with notes of cinnamon, licorice, strong cough drops (something for the fishermen), dark dried fruits and bitter chocolate, lots of spices here! Medium sweetness, full body with a oliy texture. Long lasting finish, the flavors in this beer seems to last a decade. No trace of alcohol at any time, watch out! A very complex, fullbodied Belgian beer - this one gets a very high rating. World class!

Craft Beer Co. Pours darkest brown/black with a thin off white head. Basically looks like a porter. Nose is fruity pears, chocolate malt, brown sugar. Taste is chocolate, bitterness, prunes, pears. Like a roasted chocolate porter but with the added dimension of fruity hops. Finish is chocolate.

330mL bottle poured very dark almost black into my goblet with nice beige head and lacing. Aromas are of caramel and chocolate. Taste is a nutty sweet maltiness, some chocolate and a mild hoppy finish. Mild carbonation and heavy body.
