4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Gorbalev (2823) - Ontario, CANADA - JUN 26, 2006
2005 bottle shared with Hogtown Harry and Blankboy, Harry’s bottle. Milky hazy brown, bib bubbly brown head. Malt, spice, light chocolate flakes, and sourness in aroma - really really nice and unique. Wow, incredible taste: tons of sweet chocolate, malt, slight spice - alcohol is barely present. Fruity finish. Complex and unique, my description has not done it justice. I loved it and it exceeded expectations.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry & tupalev -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Vintage 2005.</i > Pours a murky dark brown with floaties and a huge lasting rocky off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, chocolate, spices, a mild sourness, brown sugar, dark fruit and more -- nice and complex. Flavour follows the aroma and is quite sweet but never cloying, very well balanced and once again, complex. Alcohol’s well hidden. Full bodied. This is simply fantastic.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2006 Bottle (330ml). Shared with blankboy and tupalev, my bottle via trade with Boutip. Poured thick opaque deep reddish-brown with a large lasting tan foamy-creamy head, plenty of white chunkies. Rich caramel malt, rich spices, brown sugar, very yeasty, chocolate toffees, tart treefruits and a double hint of red wine and lactose; boozy on warming. Taste as the aroma, more alcohol and chocolate, still plenty of malt, quite bitter on the finish, lovely, strong, sweet yet balanced. Mouthfeel thick, syrupy, mildly alcoholic, complex and wonderful. I wish it had been a 75cl bottle.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 ABUSEDGOAT (1937) - California, USA - JUN 18, 2006
UPDATED: SEP 15, 2007 800th rating. Thanks to xproudfoot for this one. 2005 bottle. Wow! Poured a cloudy deep brown body with a huge head and excellent lacing. Aroma is spices (big time anise), dark sugar, dark fruits, chocolate, caramel, yeast, more.. wow. Flavor is just so smooth. I couldn’t ask for better balance here. 10% ABV is nowhere to be seen. Complex, balanced, tasty, smooth... truly a great beer.

375 ml 2005 bottle special thanks to xproudfoot. Pours a murky brown with a wonderful tan head. Aromas were a lot of molassas, caramel, brownsugar, raisin, anise, dark cherry, and toffee. More of the same in the flavor. Sweeter than the aroma though. Sugar cubes, and some alcohol, but not a lot. I just couldn’t find anything about this beer I didn’t like.
4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Lubiere (8239) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 1, 2006
Bieropholie Private import. 2005: Dark brown ale with little floaties. Thick resilient moka head. Agreeing with colleagues below, this is definitely has a very nice berry aroma, blueberry, with notes of licorice and caramel. In mouth, a nice sweet blueberry, candi sugar and licorice, with smooth alcohol lasting, and lighter bodied than expected. However, this is a teaser and a pleaser.

Aroma is full of fresh blueberries/blackberries I mean HUGELY full of it. It’s like sticking your nose in a bush. A berry bush ya perv! Also get lots of black licorice, sweet bread dipped in molasses and some spicy alcohol. Body is a murky brown with a magnificent creamy tan head that is a full two fingers thick, extra fluffy and long lasting. Fore is sweet candi sugar, molasses, bready sweet malts, mashed berries, perfumey alcohol. Very desert like and could be cloying if I wasn’t in the mood for it. Still it’s a lovely beer and a real treat.
4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Boutip (3971) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 23, 2006
Bottle (vintage 2005): Poured opaque dark brown ale with a super huge foamy dirty brown head with perfect retention. Aroma of liquorice and sweet malt is incredibly well balance. Taste is an almost perfect balance between strong sweet malt with caramel and liquorice with some candi sugar (I would say a bit too much though) with a slightly funky ending from the yeast. Body is full and alcohol is very well masked. This beer is almost like a sweeter version of Rochefort 10 and there is not much more praise I can give to this beer.
4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Fantomas23 (463) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 22, 2006
Truly great beer enjoyed from the bottle at De Garre. A very deep beer layered with a great amount of flavors, each in harmony even at their most dissonant. The first sensation is darkness with gingerbread and molasses. This lends a good balance of savory spice and sweetness. Further back on the tongue are notes of licorice and wood (cedar?). The brew finishes like strong, bitter coffee. If this is what Old Fishermen drink, I want to know how to get that job.
