COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Very dark beer. Aroma and taste are a bit coffee-like, roasty malts, caramel. I have the 2007 version in my fridge and will try that one soon.

33cl. bottle in a private beer tasting. It pours a deep dark brown liquid with some ruby tones and with a slow-paced tan consistent medium head that lats throughout the beer and leaves a nice lacing. The aroma is ultra-complex; there are some hints of grapes, vanilla, floral and herbal hops, along with caramel malt, spices and fennel. There is also a mild smell of dark fruits. It tastes maltier, very intense actually, with coffee and burnt caramel, and hints of herbal hops and species. Mild carbonation and full-bodied, this moderate bitter and medium sweet beer ends dry with a hoppy and roasty aftertaste. Presentation is precious (though it lacks a customized crown cap). One of the best brews out there; an original belgian ale.

Vintage 2009. Very dark brown with a brown head. Aroma is sweet, malty, dried fruit, yeasty, dark sugar and spicy. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet and bitter finish. Smooth, soft and full bodied. 130611

Dark brown pour and almost zero head. Aromatic spices and liquorice dominate the nose. Complex, rich flavours of dates, chocolate, nutmeg, whiskey malt and a touch of caramelised balsamic seaweed. Lots of alcohol in the finish - this might also be the first time I get to pull out the "umami" tag. Soft, full mouthfeel. Delightful and utterly unique.

33cl bottle at home. This is an amazing beer. Nearly black in color, it looks like a stout, but not hardly. So very rich tasting, (raisins, chocolate, cherries, and a nutmeg like spice).

2007 bottle. Pours a deep brown with a creamy light brown head Nice lacing. A big nose of cherries and rich dark fruits, with a woody overtone. Taste is malty with raisins and light spices rounding out the flavors. Hints of chocolate sweetness on the finish Nice body. Delicious stuff.

2006 bottle. Taste was rich dark fruits with a fantastically complex finish of roasted, medium sweet, crisp, and floral flavors. This will be a beer I keep on hand in the cellar. Highly recommended.
