3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 mxtur (266) - Michigan, USA - FEB 22, 2011
UPDATED: MAR 8, 2011 I’m not quit sure how I feel about this one. I enjoy the caramel and leather aroma. The appearance is spot on with floating sediment beauties. Has a creamy texture and average carbonation and a sharp finish. The taste is a little sour and slightly salty. I like it, but I think I was expecting a little more from this one, but I am sure the 10% alcohol will make up for any lacking qualities.

Draught @BBF 2010. You might not expect the light fruit overtones from such a dark pour, but raisins, plums, caramel and sugar dominate. Very nice.

Bottle from 2006. Haven’t had this in a while, always liked it. Pours a very dark brown with a light head. Very little carbonation. Light spicy aroma. Taste is that of fruit and spice, great mouth feel, very easy to drink. This beer has held up well for 5 years!

Pours a dark brown colour with a dense light brown head.
It has a lovely aroma of dates, raisins, prunes and caramel with a hint of figs and alcohol.
Flavour is dominated by dates and dark caramel but also raisins, spices and alcohol comes through. Very pleasant and smooth dark fruits after taste.

This was the winning Belgian I tasted during a night at Brasserie V. Full-bodied, tons of dark fruit flavors, a subtle yeastiness and a very warming alcohol finish. The alcohol flavors become stronger as it warms. Yup, I’ll take another.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 wedgie9 (1370) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - FEB 13, 2011
Rating #600. Tasted on 2/13/11 from a 330mL bottle purchased at West Lakeview Liquors, 2006 Vintage. Pours very dark red, almost looks like a very hazy red wine, with a massive tan head that slowly recedes, leaving lace along the inside of the glass, to thick, rocky, and spotty lace. The nose is very intense with caramel malt, a good amount of roast, and fruitiness that ranges from dried figs and raisins, to very vinous along with some cinnamon and other baking spices, vanilla, and some candi sugar sweetness. The flavor starts off with the sweeter candi sugar, vanilla, and dried fruits, moving to the baking spices and more roasted notes, and finishing with the vinous flavor and light bitterness, with the caramel flavor present throughout. The body is medium with average carbonation and a super long and complex finish that although dominated by vanilla and caramel, also contains all of the other flavors mentioned in this rating at some point. This beer is one-hundred percent worth all of the hype that it receives.

Bottle is labeled 2006 sampled 9/10/2008
Pours a cloudy dark brown with a smallish tan head that sticks around for a while. Smells of caramel malt, lots of fruits, a bit of bread and same candy sugar sweetness. Tastes of spices and some sweetness up front. Followed by a caramel malty taste fading into a bit of alcohol and Belgian yeast funk. Full body with lots of carbonation that mixes with creamy and coats your entire mouth. Great example of the style!
