Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

This is a great beer. Pours a cloudy brown color with very little head. Very pleasant sweet aroma. Nicely balanced flavors of dark fruit, caramel, chocolate and spices. Alcohol is hidden very well.

0.33 l bottle, vintage 2006. Dark reddish brown color with big creamy head. Sweetish, warming, chocolatey and raisiny aroma with black currant, anis and a hint of solvent. Sweet and warming flavor with plenty of dark fruits and chocolate. Licorice and coffee in the finish. Soft palate. Very tasty, nice smooth dark malt and fruit character. I would like to have more belgian fermentation flavors though.

2006 bottle, from Forest City in CT. Pours brown with a large, creamy, tan head. Aroma of fresh dates, chocolate, rum cake, and red cherries. Palate is pleasantly prickly, with full-bodied mouthfeel. Flavor of rich, chocolaty fruit and malt which is absolutely delicious. I also detect some well-blended spicy, woody notes that just add to the beauty of this beer. Pannepot is one of those rare brews that every beer taster aspires to have one day, then upon trying, finds it to be even better than anticipated. What else . . . oh, the finish is mildy sweet, with a hint of warming alcohol (which was otherwise undetectable throughout). As noted, this was a 2006 bottle, so perhaps the age contributed to Pannepot’s beauty, but I’ve just never had a beer so complex, smooth, and tasty at the same time. Just name a price for this and I’m there . . .

330ml Bottle: Sour aroma makes my mouth water. Smells of sour fruit and some malts. Poured dark brown with a hint of purple in color and a small beige head that lasted throughout. Opaque. Sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and light to medium sour. Tastes of alcohol, dark ripe fruits, malts, light chocolate, malts, raisins, motor oil, and spices. Light to medium body. Thin, dry, chalky texture. Lively carbonation. Sour, chocolate and malt finish is dry.

Pours brown with tan head. High carbonation and lacing. Aroma is spice. Flabor is sweet fruit (raisins) and spices. Too sweet for my taste and not a big fan of raisins.

I tasted this beer before I got my account with ratebeer, so I can’t really remember all the flavors.
