In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

11/09/2015 @home - 33cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck. Dark brown with light tanned head.Always amazing to see the beer slowly passing into foam. Always one of the nicest beer to view, just after it was poured. Aroma : port, light roast, caramel. Taste : I would swear it was aged on wood, port, light roast, some chocolate, lightly some fruit. amazing soft oily mouthfeel.

Awesome thick and dense aroma with notes of port wine, a bit of dry winy notes as well. It’s also bready, biscuity with pleasant alcohol in the end. It’s dark copper color beer, maybe even seal color, with beautiful ruby reflections. One finger, nice looking, beige head. In mouth it’s a bit over carbonated, but in the same time gives this super silk and velvety feeling. Very pleasant alcohol touch in the end. In taste notes are similar to these in the aroma. In the beginning it has this port wine sweetness, but then some bready, malty and biscuity notes appear. It’s not very sweet. Super pleasant alcohol touch in the palate. Great style representant. It’s just an awesome beer.

Fruity aroma. Light brown head, dark clear liquid. Medium-high sweetness and light bitterness. Soft carbonation. Overall a fantastic well tasting beer!

Appearance: murky brown with one finger of dense mocha head, good retention and spotty lacing. (4/5) Aroma: dark dried fruit, floral perfume, molasses, alcohol, coffee. (9/10) Taste: moderate-strong sweet, light bitter and faint tart. (9/10) Palate: medium-full body, low carbonation, warming finish. (4/5) A very good example of the style - hearty flavour, decent body, and a mild-mannered yet pleasantly warming ABV. Not deeply complex, but still very good. (18/20)

Bottle in Amsterdam. Nice black pour with tan head. Lots of fruits in the nose. Taste also of dark berries, plums, coffee, chocolate. Well balanced. Really nice creamy finish.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - opaque black with a nice fawn head. Nose - molasses, burnt bread. Treacle. Taste - sticky molasses bread. Light nuts and chocolate too. Palate - medium to full bodied with a rich creamy texture and a fairly elegant finish. Overall - this is a lovely beer but I really can’t understand how it can be rated as one of the best in Belgium. It doesn’t have extra layers of complexity that I’d expect.
