COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Poured from bottle into tulip glass. Thick head and dark brownish color. Aroma a little bit pungent with malt and vinegar. Flavor is immediately complex and intriguing. Flat carbonation with a fruity sweetness on the front end mixed with toasty malts, a moderate sourness, and some subtle chocolate. Almost no booziness in the finish. Instead, it ends in a soft saccharine like cola finale. A beer that is hard to pin down and keeps you interested through the whole bottle. Intellectually stimulating.

Poured a cloudy brown color with a large off white head and no lacing. Aroma of mint, dark fruits, roast, yeast, and a funky barnyard aspect as well. Taste was sweet raisins, chocolate, roast, tons of spices and an alcohol burn.

Bought at Belgian Beer Shop, Leuven. Rich, warming, chocolatey sweetness gives way to a pleasant mild bitterness. This might just be my favourite beer.

330ml bottle from Beers of Europe website (£3.79):
Dark opaque brown colour with some ruby & a bubbly, light brown head about 0.5cm tall that fades quite quickly.
Strong dark & ripe fruits (dates/plums/raisins/currants). Lots of sugar & alcohol tinged yet not as strong as a 10% beer should be. Caramel malts come through with some acidity. Complex but not bad.
A strong taste with strong fruit that mirror the nose (dates/plum/currants & a few others). Very sweet some acidity & an almost wine like taste. Grapes feature with lots of sugars too.
Very sweet with some alcohol (doesn’t seem 10% though). Smooth, medium body with some acidity but it still goes down easily, helped by the medium carbonation.

Nice stuff from De Struise here, the beer was exceptionally sweet throughout with quite a complex mix of dark & ripe fruits that seems to mask some of the alcohol. It was definitely an enjoyable beer & one that went down well but I’m not entirely sure it is one that I’d go back to again, mainly because it was so strong.

"2007 vintage-poured very dark...almost stout-like, but ruby tinged when held up to light. thin tan head. strong aroma of fruit (fig/dates), malt, molasses, booze. feel is very smooth and full...one of the best for any belgian i’ve ever had. it was nice to not have ridiculous amounts of sediment, floaties, and overcarbonation. those thing seperate this from others. the flavor was quite good as well...more molasses and fruity malts, spice. if it had any faults, maybe it was too rich, but really no complaints. solid beer. i ever so slightly prefer the grand reserve."

Draft @ basement beer bar in Aalborg. Amazing caramel aroma with overripe red berries, dried dark fruit, alcohol. Reddish brown with tiny off-white head. Quite sweet, more fruit. Soapy texture, great body, finish is longlasting, light carbonation.

Surprisingly dark for the style (drunk in a Belgian Strong Dark beer tasting). Astringent quality from the dark malt with notes of liquorice and spices. Intense and full body. Very good.
