COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Produces a somewhat greasy feel on the lips. A taste of liquorice remains in the mouth. Lovers of hoppy beers will less appreciate this kind of beer..

2010 Bottle. Pours dark brown with minimal head. Nose is super sweet and smells like ripe dark fruits. Plums and belgian candy sugar dominate then the hops balance it out with a slightly bitter finish. The flavor lingers on the pallet for quite some time after the sip. This is an amazing beer. Crisp and clean.

Very dark brown color. Very complex aroma with dark fruits, coffee, alcohol. The taste is dominated by dark fruits and roasted malts. I also sense a bit of burned wood in the background. It finish with a tartness, that I don’t think fits this otherwise very nice beer.

2006 bottle. Pours a really dark mahogany red color with a beige head. Aroma is super complex with dark fruits like figs, raisins and dates, brown sugar, caramel and sweet malt, toasted malt, coffee and earthy notes. Flavor follows the nose, lots of dark fruits again raisins, figs, woody notes, caramel and sweet malt, toasted and roasted notes, brown sugar, earthy notes and a light tartness reminiscent of balsamic vinegar. The body is medium to full with a dry mouthfeel. Overall and fantastic Belgian Strong Dark Ale, this has aged so well!

2011 vintage. Dark brown pour with a frothy beige head. Thick. Aroma was dark candied sugar, figs, some grape and a bit of booze. Flavors were full of grape bubblegum, brown sugar and some dried fruit. Mouthfeel was full with a subtle but present carbonation. Just a touch of heat in the finish. All in all a wonderful Belgian ale full of rich dark flavors. Top notch stuff.

2007 bottle. Very dark brown with a smallish, light tan head. Raisins, molasses, plums, brown sugared dates, cola and anise aroma is pleasant but not overly abundant. Dates, cocoa and red grapes dominate the moderately sweet flavor, though the finish has a decent helping of graham cracker, toffee, very light roast and caramel maltiness. Finish is dry, very mildly alcoholic and has just a bit of metallics. Very rich mouthfeel with a light-to-moderate carbonation.

Very dark brown color. Small head, tan color. Aroma of malt, raisin and dried fruit. Some coffee and spice. Sweet, lots of alcohol. Sticky texture, full body. Low carbonation. Excellent, but I would love this beer more if the alcohol did not have such a high profile.
