In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Tasting this very complex beer is an amazing experience. At first fruity and spicy esters (they remind me those of the Fermentis T-58 yeast), then a massive doppelbock caramel aroma soon followed by christmas cake, mature fruit, nuts, then chocolate, and at last bitter coffee. The aftertaste is incredibly clean and not so persisting. The body is lighter than you’d expect. Every sip is different from the following one that I think I’d need at least 3 bottles to really understand this elegant beer and how it plays with its balance between maltiness and "esterness". Hops actually not perceived neither spices added. Very dark color with a medium foam. The alcohol content is just something printed on the label.

Bottle 0,33l. Deep brown color, even black. Medium beige head. In aroma there ale lot of spicy notes, some dried fruits, caramel. Taste is even better! There is caramel, biscuits, fruits, light coffee, spices, a light hoppy finish... it’s very complex! Highly carbonated. Excellent one.

33cl @ bottle.

Dark tan head is dense and persistent. Nose offers an evolving painting of aromas; dark chocolate, nutmeg, date, clove, sultana, roast nuts, nut brown butter, earthy spice, molasses. Creamy, syrupy, chewy body. Rich, decadent, without being cloying. Smooth carbonation. There’s so much to enjoy going on here; chocolate liqueur, liquorice, charred barrel notes, stewed vinous fruits, raisins, clove & nutmeg & black pepper, cooked citrus, treacle & dark candy sugar, a subtle earthiness, moderate bitterness. Smoooooth finish, lingers so nicely. Where’d that 10% go!? Sensational beer - one of the best Belgians, truly.

Finally got to try this Pours a clear dark brown with a big yellowish head. Date-, prune- and alcohol aroma. Big and stable off-white head. Tastes quite sweet of molasses and sirup spiced with dates, figs and prunes. Hint of burnt caramel. A strong effect in the back of the mouth - nice. Medium to high carbonation. Very full beer with a sweet finish

Pour a dark garnet color with a light tan head and decent lacing. Aroma is fruity with red apples, cherry cough drop, some banana even and bready yeast. Taste is dark fruit like raisin and plums, cherries and bread. Nice and flavorful Belgian.
