In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Bottle 2011: Very dense black. Light head and lace. Extremely dark roast profile. Hard hope lift. Mocha edge. Woody spice edge rather than hop not. Roast dominates not malt or hope or fruit. Dry to off dry, not sour and medium to medium low bitterness. Dense and long. Roasted flavor dominates. Very stout like. Lacks complexity and richness of some Belgium strong ales.

Happy to see this on tap at CBC Covent Garden. Pours a very dark brown with a recv edge and a tan head. Huge dark sticky fruit aroma - prunes, figs. Rummy too, with toffee and liquorice and some cherry candy. Full body, light carbonation. Sticky. Dark toffee, grass, light apple, rum, toffee pudding, coke, black jacks... Its rich, sweet and tasty. Nice enough.

Flaska drucken på nya Tröls. 2012 Vintage. Murrig brun färg med lågt krämigt skum. Från kylskåpet och väl kall. Relativt syrlig, söt, värmande alkohol, kraftig men ändå aningen platt. Stor söta smaker av torkad frukt, främst russin, men också banan, päron, plommon, körsbär, madeira, sötlakrits, marsipan, vanilj, mörkt socker, choklad. Väl integrerade smaker och alkohol. Riktigt riktigt gott.

Bottle 2013. Black with no head. Hints of caramel and coffee. Again it could’ve been more enjoyable to drink this beer in winter rather than the summertime. Warming. Tasty. What not to love?

Very sweet fudge drink. Prefer the American strong ale which is an excellent style but this is good. Very dark for a Belgian. A bit too sweet in the long run.

Bottle, 2013. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma: brown sugar, bread, leather, dark fruit, alcohol. Taste: cane sugar, raisins, coffee, vanilla, spices, wood, chocolate. Creamy mouthfeel, complex, full bodied, very sweet (but not distracting) with a warming rum finish. Lovely!

Bottle, poured into a tulip. Appearance- very dark, almost black, a little bit of light comes through when held to the light, where it appears dark brown. Head is one finger, light brown, it dissipates to leave a slight covering. Aroma- dark fruits, cherry, raisin, sugary fruit, a bit of bread and yeast, dark malts, chocolate fruit and nut, some cocoa powder and caramel, definite hoppiness. Taste- where to start? Lots of bitter, dark chocolate, big roasted malts, espresso coffee, hint of liquorice, rum and raisin ice cream, lots of dark fruits as well- cherry, raisin. Some vague vanilla sweetness and toffee, and there’s a bit of banana bread in there too. Amazingly complex and so much going on- all the flavours vie for your attention. Mouthfeel is also exceptional- full and viscous, lasting bitter finish, nearly chewy, and silky smooth. This is incredible- one of the best beers I’ve ever had.
