Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

A nice, deep brown... the head on here leaves a beautiful, creamy looking sheet that seems that it will continue to stick around until drinking begins. It’s a lighter tan. This smells beautiful... toffee scents, a definite spiciness... I can’t make out all of what is coming together there; it’s all rather complex and rich. Cinnamon? Allspice? Clove? A little chocolate, and hints of dark fruit - raisin and date. A delicious medley of malt roast, spices, toffee, dark fruits, some spotty notes of anise, maybe (most notable post-finish). Alcohol makes an appearance, but there’s plenty else going on here to not pay attention to it - that’s to say, it’s not really ’hidden’; it’s just a little part of the bigger picture. Full body, somewhat creamy, somewhat foamy. A very nice feeling brew, with a pleasant warming on the way down. It’s rather candy-like and makes for an incredibly easy drinker. It’s somewhat tempting to drink it quickly, but exercising some patience is very rewarding. An excellent take at the style, and would do very well among some of the abbey brews. Pick it up if you come by it. Excellent stuff.

Bottle, 33cl. Pours a redbrown beer with a big lightbrown head. At first the aroma is strange and very complex. The aroma is roasted malt, sweetness and hops (blackberries). The flavor is molasses or dark syrup with dark malts. Almost no hopflavor. The mouthfeel is bold, and the overall impression is complex.

Pour is extremely dark brown, with a tinge of dark ruby when held to light. A nice, thick, tan head. Aroma is heavy...caramel, spices, alcohol, malts, and fruits. Flavor is also complex of caramel, fruits, malts, alcohol, and spices. Great on the palate, full bodied, smooth but then the finish is an alcoholic finish that I didn’t particularly like. I liked this brew to an extent but I wasn’t blown away by any awesomeness...just a decent brew.

Pours a dark brown color with a large lasting tan / off white head. The aroma is caramel, spice, malty sweet, sour cherries very complex. Flavor is very much the same, caramel, spicy, malty, dark fruit (raisins), yeast, alcohol. This is a very complex beer to say the very least. This is an amazing brew, on a very short list of beers that actually stands up to the hype. I loved it!

11.2 oz. bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a large lasting beige head. The aroma is caramel malt, fruity like you find in many Belgians, spices, moderate sweetness, and a hint of banana. The flavor is more sweet dark malts up front. Caramel, dark fruits (raisin, cherries), spices, biscuits, and some alcohol mix wonderfully throughout. This is definetly a standout beer. Complex and extremely drinkable.

unfiltered brown/red. no head what so ever. aromas are sweet/sour, cherries, cinnamon, caramel. Stone fruit flavors with a not too heavy sourness. Maybe a fig of fig. There is an efferensce about it.

330 mL bottle purchased at Bruisin Ales. Poured a dark cola brown with a medium tan head. The aroma was spicy with yeast notes, dark fruits and alcohol. The flavor was fruity with warming alcohol and candied sugar. The palate was awesome. A warming mouthfeel from the alcohol, with a chewy feeling as well. Good carbonation and a medium/full body add to the enjoyment. This was a great beer.
