COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

i think this beer is the best among all of the belgians. better than any of the trappists, including westvleteren 12 and rochefort 10. of course, they’re all good. i just think this one is the best. has the most going on / is the most interesting and most enjoyable.

Bottle 2006 .An opaque dark reddish brown pour with a huge beige head that left some spotty lacing and hung around awhile. Aroma is of sweet dark fruit, cherries, sweet malt, apple, chocolate and booze. Flavor is a pretty complex mix of dark fruit, wood, spice, coco, and alcohol. Mouthfeel is rich and full and finishes, with a lingering oakiness, slightly sour on end . Full body , lively carbonation. I thought it was good but not over the top .

Bottle, 2007 vintage. Deep opaque brown pour with a fgood looking frothy beige head. No head after 5 sec. The vinous aroma has a really nice touch of yeast sweetness with a flowery touch. Nice berries and caramel from the malts. Hints of cheeries, raisins and dried dark fruits. Taste is dominated by the yeast as well but has more of a malt side. Slightly roasted, hints of coffee, burnt caramel, cinnamon, figs, dates, hints of sweet liqourice. Very high carbonation, maybe a bit too much. But a very good brew, a fine balance between the often dominating yeast and the roasted malts and spices.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2011 Nuts, sugarcane. Sticky sweetness in taste, yet not in aroma. Some hops. Small brown head with heavy black body. Foam develops in mouth giving a long sweet aftertaste. (33cl bottle) Will have to have it again to really explore its complexities. Update: Enjoyed it much better this time. Drank it not too cold to get the full complexity. Looks awesome and tastes similarly.

Ottima

2007 vintage. Popped the cap off this brew and I could see the head and bubbles slowly start to creep up to the top. Poured this beer with a gorgeous free flowing tan head. The color of the beer is an extremely dark mahogony with some maroon tones coming through. Insane nose on this beer. Believe it or not, I smell Red Bull, liquorice, plum, honey roast, and Coca Cola syrup. Whoa, is there some carbonation in there! The taste is very remiscent of the nose. More of the dark fruit comes through. Plum, nectarine, great hop bite on the mid-palate, some raison bread, and a melange of dried dark fruit. Not boozy at all. I love this finish. It lingers on without being cloyingly sweet and sticky. I really would like some yeasty artisinal bread, fruit marmalades, and some mild cheese to pair with this beer. I really do just adore this beer. Enough said.
