COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Bottle served in a tulip. 2006 Vintage. Bubbles out of the botttle upon opening. Get a glass quick! Pours hazy, dark brown-red with a medium sized beige-grey head that shrinks to a ring and thin foam top. Little to no lacing. Big fruity aroma full of pepper and spices. Sweet and malty flavor. Bold pit fruit, malt, and chocolate covered cherries. Medium-full body, little carbonation yet fizzy, and a creamy texture. Ultra long, creamy, oily, malt finish. Almost gets a bump just for the impressive length.

Pours black with a small tan head. Huge rich flavour with some dark fruit, chocolate, malt and classic Belgian yeasty flavour to finish it off. Extremely well balanced. Excellent beer.

UPDATED: JUL 2, 2011 Pretty good strong ale. Poured a hazy dark amber color. Malty and sweet balanced well with the alcohol. Too strong and sweet to quaff many of these in one sitting. But good for a sipping ale on a cold evening.

Drinking the 2010 version right now. Looks the same just flatter. A bit more sharp and bitter. A little bit of chocolate taste with some metallic flavors. Chalky. Bitter aftertaste. Not very spicy.

A: The pour is a dark red-brown color with a solid, creamy tan head on top. S: A really rich fruity, chocolatey aroma. There are a lot of dark fruits and berries, particularly blueberries and cherries. A really strong malt and bread component as well. T: The fruity and malty sweetness comes out of the gates strong. There is a bit of chocolate, caramel, and toffee. In terms of fruits, blueberries, red grapes, and cherries. A hint of alcohol as the beer warms. M: A fairly full bodied beer with a really full and creamy carbonation. D: You can never go wrong with this one, and I’m happy to see how well it holds up to aging. A really fantastic beer and I wish I had bought more.

Nice dark fruit flavors with clove and cinnamon. Alcohol is balanced well with dark malts and hops. Slightly bitter finish. Nice dark brownish red color. A bit sticky on the finish.

Black as night with dark head. Cherry, spices and hobet in the aroma. Sweet and dark flavor with syrup, honey, spices and cherries balanced well with alcohol.

Enjoyed at the Pub St-Alexandre in Quebec City (in 2008). 2006 bottled edition. Poured a very dark brown colour that was hard to see any highlights. Had a nice coffee-looking top over the brew, and brown sediments at the bottom. Very beautiful aromas of molasse, dark roasted malts and notes of coffee. Full-bodied mouthfeel. The taste was on the dark fruits side, with the alcohol very well-hidden, a nutty finish and a plum-coffee aftertaste (expecially after breathing a while). A very nice Belgian strong ale.

Bottle at the brewery. Very fun, inspiring and interesting to try this one while listening to Carlo Grootaert´s word about this brew and the brewery itself! It pours almout black. Aroma is filled with sweet dark fruits, coffee, dark malt and little spicey. Flavor and the mouth feel is stong and big. It´s burnt malt, brown sugar, dark fruits, coffe and dark chocolate. As sad before it´s round and strong big mouth feel. Complex!
