Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Pours a burnt sienna color and a silky, dense khaki colored head. Complicated mix of aromas: Sweet chocolate, licorice, allspice, raisins, and a slight roast wood note. Thick, smooth body. Initial taste of chocolate liqueur and dark fruits, followed by the spice mix and pralines. Nice and complicated, but its a very rich beer that needs to be enjoyed slowly.

Ordered one of these off the Internet. Pours almost jet black/dark brown with a creamy brown head. The aroma is of licorice, spice, oak, a little nut, dark fruit, hint of caramel, and finally raisins. The flavor is pretty complex, creamy, sweet and bitter. What you have here is a hint of raisin, hint of spice, roasted malts, dark fruits, hint of rum and a little nut. This is a very rich brew that almost has to be sipped. Very well balanced and deep. Overall I was impressed but expected more in the flavor department, as this is one of the most top rated beers in the world.

Bottle I still enjoyed the denmark version more. I feel the etoh comes through more in this one and the spices are less intense. Still a solid beer. Note, i dont know these bottles seem to be hit or miss ill get one with a really creamy body where the spices are as they should be and then the next one tastes metallic. My score is an average of these experiences.

This one pours similar to coffee or soda, dark black and murky. The aroma is sort of sour smells like soy sauce in a way and then i pick up some chocolate and fruits. The flavor does not match the aroma really, at first i’m hit with a whole lot of carbonation and then a burn from the alcohol after that i’m really not sure, to tell the truth this isn’t the greatest thing i’ve had something is just missing for me.

2006 bottle courtesy of Ughsmash. Thanks! Nearly opaque chestnut brown pour with a medium head that fades quickly. Very spicy aroma with notes of cinnamon, allspice and bitter chocolate. Taste is the same spices, rum soaked raisins, cocoa powder. Slight nuttiness and alcohol warmth. Sweet, thick mouthfeel.

Sødlig frugt, krydderi, karamel malt, Fyldig krop. Vinøs. Rigtig god bitterhed. Ikke meget alkoholsmag for 10%. Lækker eftersmag

330ml bottle bought at Ølbutikken, Copenhagen. 2006 vintage. This old Fisherman’s ale poured a very dark body with a brown tint covered by a creamy, lacing head. Spicy aroma with cinnamon mixed with smell of sweet caramel malts. Rich in flavour with weight on candy sugar, dried fruits and dark berries added a touch of leather. Finish off with notes of both yeast and alcohol. Full bodied, but a little too sweet for my taste buds (shared with Finn A., 31.05.2008).
