COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2014 Birra fenomenale!!!

2009 bottle at home in my Struise glass. Picked up at the school yard in Aug 2009. had this a few times before, but this is my first rate.

Aroma is brown sugars, muscavado sugars, tart apple, berry, raisin and some tart raspberry and serbert. Dark caramel brown / orange coloured pour with a lasting thin light tan head. Flavours is vinous, caramel, berry fruits, unrefined sugars, subdued but nice yeast complexity. Palate is medium full, vinous and highish carbonation, tingles the tongue. Quite well attenuated. Good stuff.

Drucken på Monks Porterhouse, gamla stan. Gräddig belgisk doft och kropp. Smaken går i samma tecken som är rätt avrundad och lite belgisk söt. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Vloeit lang uit.. Chocolade. Het aroma zou een licht zuurtje als smaak geven echter dat is nauwelijks te bespeuren.

A great ale. Pours a deep mahogany brown. Aromas are bubblegum and dried fruit. Flavors are dried fruit, coffee, raisins. So good and smooth. One of the best Belgian ales out there.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 18E). Bottle 33 cl - Batch 5528260913- AROMA: nice dried fruits aromas, reminiscent of raisins and dried figs, with a sweet and caramel/vanilla malt background. no roasted aromas, nor hops and diacetyl. alcohol aromas are spicy and pleasant and not solventy, with an old Port like quality. APPEARANCE: dark brown color with a slight ruby tint. nice moussy brown head with good retention. TASTE: well balanced flavours similar to the aromas (raisins and dried figs) with a sweet and caramelly/vanilla Port like background. moderate bitterness that balances the sweetness. finishes medium-dry. no roasted flavours. gente alcohol warmth and not solventy. PALATE: smooth medium body with medium carbonation with a smooth alcohol warmth noticeable. OVERALL: a very nice, complex dark belgian ale with a plethora of aromas to dive in. And very dangerous...

0.33L bottle. Pours black with a thick, brown head. Sweet aromas of cereal malt, vanilla, alcohol, cotton candy. Falvor is quite sweet up front, dark fruit and vanilla. Morpths into a complex sweetnes, a bit hard to pull out inidividual flavors, but it moves quickly through quie a few of them. Finishes with enough dark malt bitter and hop to cut the sweetness. Full body with a creamy mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Overall, some nice complexity to this beer. Definitely good for desert!

Beautiful dark brown colour, minimal head. Aroma: Red fruits, caramel, toasty. Taste: Malt, spicy (cinnamom), dark chocolate. Licorice. Alcohol is noticeable, but not that much. Very complex and tastefully and extremely balanced. One of my all time favs!

Aroma is deep malts, molasses, light caramel, plum and raisin. Taste is some light sour notes from age, deep rich malts with a nice sweetness. Dark fruits compliment the fruit body nicely. Appearance is a amber /black body with a thin beige head that retains fairly poorly.
