In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

[2011] 33cl bottle. Slow gusher. Murky mahogany with a foamy beige head. Lots of sediments. Flavors are bread, dried fruits, cherries, plum, dates, dark chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, toffee, licorice, tobacco and spices with vinous and slight oxidized notes. Pleasant alcohol warmth. Full body, bright light carbonation, creamy and sticky texture. Delicious.

The "Fisherman’s Ale". Not Struise’s first, but the beer with which they first attracted international attention. A wonderfully complex and rich, profound brew, dark bronze colour, hazy, creamy head, very fruity and deeply malty profile, candi sugar, complex with pleasant drying spicy notes, elegant yeastiness and characterful hop bitterishness in the finish along with warming, liqueurish alcohol. Very agreeable, a great beer indeed.

In tap (2013) while in Brugges; great beer ... pours a very dark brown/black. Aroma somewhat of cocoa and brown sugar, finishing with a little plum. The 10% alcohol is very well hidden. A very good beer, and I will absolutely buy again

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2014 Birra fenomenale!!!
