COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Bottle. pour is nearly black with a large brown head that has a reddish tint to it as the bubbles break down and leave a thin light brown layer on top. Aroma is all dark fruit, raisin, cherry, melanoidin bomb. Taste is initially fruity then a light funky tartness comes through, like a tart apple almost. This is a 2010 bottle and here is some definite oxidation and it is the papery kind. Mouthfeel is medium to light, with some smooth alcohol warming in the ears after a couple sips. overall, pretty good, but the tartness and oxidation really prevent this from being world class.

Pours burnt umber with small superficial mocha-head (vanishes within minutes). Very little lacing. Aroma is knock-the-door-down belgian yeast and banana. Raisins, some brown sugar (molasses) and some plum. Melange of competing scents. Glorious and tone is the beer equivalent of a dessert wine. Taste is sweet - one small complaint is that it becomes a little cloying towards the end. Provides everything in the palate that it does in the nose (surprisingly rare). Banana and yeast notes are dominant but the dried fruit is never too far away. Excellent beer that provides the drinker with a conundrum that is unravelled in every sip.

(Botella 330 ml)

Bottle @ home 20140630. Pours black with a medium light brown head. Aroma of dried fruit, cherries, toffee, licorice. Taste is roasty, lots of dried fruits, alcohol (almost like rum), cherries. Full body, slightly viscous, light carbonation. Quite complex. Nice.

Bottle 2011: Very dense black. Light head and lace. Extremely dark roast profile. Hard hope lift. Mocha edge. Woody spice edge rather than hop not. Roast dominates not malt or hope or fruit. Dry to off dry, not sour and medium to medium low bitterness. Dense and long. Roasted flavor dominates. Very stout like. Lacks complexity and richness of some Belgium strong ales.

Happy to see this on tap at CBC Covent Garden. Pours a very dark brown with a recv edge and a tan head. Huge dark sticky fruit aroma - prunes, figs. Rummy too, with toffee and liquorice and some cherry candy. Full body, light carbonation. Sticky. Dark toffee, grass, light apple, rum, toffee pudding, coke, black jacks... Its rich, sweet and tasty. Nice enough.
