Huge, lively pour with a chestnut brown colour and massive, yet short-lived, tan head. Lots of floaters too. Aromas of liquorice, brown sugar and dark fruit. Flavour was sweet with plenty of malt, nutmeg and some earthy hops that added depth to the finish. Alcohol was fairly prominent, which perhaps detracted a bit from an otherwise excellent beer. Pours with a dark brown color, aromas are of some spice that I cannot name. Some spices in the flavor profile, fruit and a bit of a kick add to the usual caramel and molasses profile. This is unique beer that has a very smooth finish. AgentSteve (1357), SF Bay Area, California, USA

Nose is sweet, with dried figs and raisins, along with some brown sugar. The flavor is similar, with a smooth and sweet mid to finish, along with tangy fruit sweetness that is really unique in this ale. It ends clean and abrubtly, not lingering around. Quite creamy on the palate. Excellent. Lothore (276), California, USA

A- Pours a smooth velvety black hue. A creamy, oak head adorns this dark brew fading to blankets of lacing.
S- Aroma is rich and deeply earthy with spicy alcohol tones that tickle the nose.
T- Very balanced spice with undertones of dark chocolate and some coffee. Alcohol hides behind curtains of mixed lighter fruits. Pleasantly warms as it creeps towards the stomach.
M- Silky smooth with bubbles that seem to dance on the tongue long after the sip is swallowed.
D- A brew to sip on and respect. While it could be cloying and alcohol heavy in large amounts, one bottle is just enough. armando629 (965), Budapest, Hungary

Delicate sheets of lace form on the goblet. Aroma is nutmeg, vanilla, pepper, molasses, raisins, red plums, and cherries. Almost full bodied in the mouth with a silky carbonation. Taste is very complex. Malty raisins and molasses. Fruity cherries and red plums. Vanilla, spicy peper and nutmeg. Esters and phenols come together very well here. Very nice! | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 20, 2008 11.2oz from Sam’s, Durham. A 2006 bottle that’s aging just wonderfully. This beer stands out in the memory and, with each bottle cracked, you’re reminded why. Pours a deep dark brown, with glints of ruby in the center, with a smallish but lively head. I love the vibrant body that these dark Belgian strongs get, it seems to combine extremes quite nicely. The nose is toffee and yeast, with some warm spice in there just faintly. But once you get into the beer, the spices emerge marvelously along with plums, anise, and port. The carbonation and the full body get it tingling at the start, but the deep, mellow, complex flavors gives this a resinous and long finish that’s bitter in the right degree. Warming, full bodied, multi-textured, this one is amazing.
