DUNGA (10), Belgium Mar 12, 2008 2006 Bottle. amazing aroma combination of spice, caramel, thick creamy head, chocolate tasting, coffee, spicy, touches of bitterness... Great looking bottle, great beer, deserves to be a trappist... Second only to 2005 Struise Pannepot and Westvleteren 12 IMO... gueuzeisgod (109), Graham, North Carolina, USA Mar 11, 2008 OK- this beer is in the 100th percentile, so I have high expectations. 2006 bottle. A good hiss when popping the cap. Rich chesnut brown, not many yeast particulates. A slightly sour nose ala Rodenbach Grand Cru. Old fruit skins. Head collapses leaving only a wisp of lace. First taste is roasty black licorice followed by nice mild acidity backed up by malt sweetness but tails off very dry. Let it warm up a bit. Slightly brandyish. A delicious fireside sipper. Will revisit this one I’m sure. waolsen (1220), Littleton, Colorado, USA Mar 9, 2008 bottle. 2006. black pour with thin tan head. raison and plum, sweet aroma. rich, chocolate, coffee, plum, spices. strong toffee and bitter on tongue. BonVoeux (40), Beveren-Leie, Belgium Mar 9, 2008 Taste from bottle, 33 cl.
Dark brown beer with creamy head. Aroma spice, sweet, dark chocolate.
Taste complex; spice, brown sugar, liquorice, roasted malts, well balanced warm alcohol feeling. Full bodied.
One of the best beers on earth!
patrick767 (2016), fort wayne, Indiana, USA Mar 8, 2008 2006 bottle form jsquire at the Fort Wayne tasting - Pours dark brown with a lingering tan head that laces well. It smells of light roast malt and spice. Malt, spice, dark fruit, and yeast comprise the thoroughly enjoyable flavor. It’s lively on the palate and finishes with pleasant alcohol warmth. Excellent. larsniclas (3383), Gothenburg, Sweden Mar 8, 2008 Bottled at Kulminator, Antwerp.
Almost black with a small, beige head.
Malty and roasted aroma with dark sugar.
Leather and tar in the flavour and very malty and sweet. Adenila (931), Denmark Mar 7, 2008 This was just pure love. Took me one and a half hour to drink a 33cl bottle since the flavor and intensity from a small zip could last for several minutes! Dark brown and opaque with an exploding head, which unfortunatly resulted in some of the brew spilling onto the table, so be aware. Aroma is intense, extremly fruity and vinouse with strong alchohol and molasses, like a quad should be, but with a nice edge of roasted chocolate. The intensity is carried into the flavor, where the fruity sweetness along with the alchohol and roasted bitterness just makes it extremly delicious. Given it was served at the right temperature, and drunk alone as a desert an hour after dinner, without anything else to mess up the flavor, this is probably the best beer i’ve ever had! LinusStick (1831), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 5, 2008 Wow...this beer is huge. Aroma was pretty strong. Strong malt and yeasty aroma with a hint of farts. Pour was deep dark brown with a nice 1 finger tan head that faded down to a thin ring after a minute. Taste was very big and bold. Strong malt with toffee and molasses fills the mouth with dark roasted malt in the aftertaste. The mouth dries after the swallow and the great carbonation combines with a yeasty bite. A little too big for my tastes but it is a great beer. I’m going to try the other version next.
