doubleipa (224), Georgia, USA Jan 23, 2008 ’06 - Plum, prune, tawny port, ginger aromas. Wimpy quarter inch, light brown head. Hazy. Not very powerful aroma, but could detect many different aromas, though. THere was even a bit of a sour note to this one; may be due to it being an ’06, but that realy shouldn’t be the case. Nice alcohol warmth. hombrepalo (745), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 22, 2008 Updated: Apr 8, 20082006 bottle 33cl or 11.2 oz. Lots of CO2, poured a dark almost stouty looking beer with lots of dark brown head into a goblet. This reminds me of a St. bernardus 12 but with more carbonation and noticable carmel / fruit flavors. Somewhat of a toffe plum aftertaste, bold yet smooth. This is quite the beer, glad to have found this one. TrefwoordPunk (549), Leiden, Netherlands Jan 21, 2008 2006 bottle, 33 cl. After opening the beer almost exploded and gushed out of the bottle and I lost about 20% of my beer. The beer pours brown with no head (others do state a head, what’s wrong with my bottle?) The Aroma is spicey, sweet with lots of ripe fruits, toffee and bitter hops. nice spicey and bitter finish. Great beer but where’s the head? BOLTZ7555 (1053), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jan 20, 2008 Cloudy mahogany with red around the edges and a solid khaki head. The beer is what one would expect from a Belgian...dark fruit (cherries, plum, prune, fig, etc.) and a noticeable sweetness of caramel/toffee. The alcohol content is fairly well masked...very drinkable for 10% abv. Good beer but not worthy of its 100%. douglas88 (1557), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Jan 19, 2008 2006 bottle thanks to footbalm. Pours a dark brown/red with a nice beige head-awesome. The aroma is really deep; spices, some dark fruits and roasted notes. The taste is smooth and has no hint of alcohol; spices, plums, figs, semi-sweet Belgian chocolate. Really nice. A beer that is good anytime. Stew41 (1042), Caulfield, Australia Jan 19, 2008 2006 Vintage: Geez this was good. Amazing combination of spice, lifted floral red wine notes and malt drive. Such a balanced and beautifully constructed drink. Really impressive. Best beer I’ve had in some time. fredandboboflo (1395), East Setauket, New York, USA Jan 17, 2008 Updated: Jul 5, 2008Bottle, out of which the beer began to bubble as I turned my back to throw out the cap. The pour was then dark brown with much less head than I expected after the bubbling over, but with lots of small bubbles nonetheless. Typical dark Belgian strong ale look. Anyway. Aroma was very Belgium. Definitely some raisin, but also some lighter fruits, banana, lemon, pear amidst the hearty Belgian yeast and malt. Some background but still feisty spices played about as well, and of course there was some alcohol. Flavor was very zesty. An odd word, but I found a certain spicy lemon zest to again work it’s way to the forefront amidst the more typical heavier flavors in such a brew. Very well rounded and complex. Mouthfeel had a certain creaminess often not found in the Belgians accompanying some alcohol-strong carbonation. Excellent.
7/5/08 So I just had this again, rerated it, and came up with exactly the same score...Definitely the highlight is the unbelievably creamy mouthfeel that exhibitis rich, sweet malt without ever approaching cloying or sticky. RichJ7 (1175), Cullman, Alabama, USA Jan 17, 2008 Dark brown pour with a decent head. Aroma of dark fruity malt, some figs, raisins. Flavor is rich and filled with dark fruit notes; fig, raisin, dates, some brandy-like notes. An excellent, spicy brew and deceptively smooth at 10%.
