Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

[bottle consumed at Ebenezer’s Pub] Opened with a powerful eruption.. then poured a nice dark brown color, almost clear, topped with a dense tan head. Aroma is fruity and dark-- plums, sugar, mild yeast character. Dense, deeply complex flavors. Rich malts, date sugar, plum, raisin and chocolate. Slightly warming in the finish, but overall extremely smooth. Outstanding!

Muddy brown in color, tan head. Fantastic combination of fruit, cake, fruitcake, gingerbread, and chocolate. This is a full round of desserts in a single glass. Ridiculously easy to drink, no signs of the alcohol, creamy body slides down the gullet.

2006 bottle courtesy of golubj; purchased in NY. Poured a dark brown with a short lasting light brown head. Really good aroma of chocolate, dark fruit, caramel with only minimal spicing. Flavor was less than spectacular as it needed some time to warm up. Once it did, it was a complex and great tasting beer. Alcohol well hidden. Really let this one warm up and enjoy.

2004 33cl bottle from Deca. Very flavourful beer. Poured very dark and cloudy with a roasted aroma. A bit of spice and nutmeg in the taste. Not my favourite type of bier (I’m not a fan of nutmeg) but definitely unique.

’06 - Plum, prune, tawny port, ginger aromas. Wimpy quarter inch, light brown head. Hazy. Not very powerful aroma, but could detect many different aromas, though. THere was even a bit of a sour note to this one; may be due to it being an ’06, but that realy shouldn’t be the case. Nice alcohol warmth.

2006 bottle 33cl or 11.2 oz. Lots of CO2, poured a dark almost stouty looking beer with lots of dark brown head into a goblet. This reminds me of a St. bernardus 12 but with more carbonation and noticable carmel / fruit flavors. Somewhat of a toffe plum aftertaste, bold yet smooth. This is quite the beer, glad to have found this one.

2006 bottle, 33 cl. After opening the beer almost exploded and gushed out of the bottle and I lost about 20% of my beer. The beer pours brown with no head (others do state a head, what’s wrong with my bottle?) The Aroma is spicey, sweet with lots of ripe fruits, toffee and bitter hops. nice spicey and bitter finish. Great beer but where’s the head?

Cloudy mahogany with red around the edges and a solid khaki head. The beer is what one would expect from a Belgian...dark fruit (cherries, plum, prune, fig, etc.) and a noticeable sweetness of caramel/toffee. The alcohol content is fairly well masked...very drinkable for 10% abv. Good beer but not worthy of its 100%.
