Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

2006 bottle thanks to footbalm. Pours a dark brown/red with a nice beige head-awesome. The aroma is really deep; spices, some dark fruits and roasted notes. The taste is smooth and has no hint of alcohol; spices, plums, figs, semi-sweet Belgian chocolate. Really nice. A beer that is good anytime.

2006 Vintage: Geez this was good. Amazing combination of spice, lifted floral red wine notes and malt drive. Such a balanced and beautifully constructed drink. Really impressive. Best beer I’ve had in some time.

Bottle, out of which the beer began to bubble as I turned my back to throw out the cap. The pour was then dark brown with much less head than I expected after the bubbling over, but with lots of small bubbles nonetheless. Typical dark Belgian strong ale look. Anyway. Aroma was very Belgium. Definitely some raisin, but also some lighter fruits, banana, lemon, pear amidst the hearty Belgian yeast and malt. Some background but still feisty spices played about as well, and of course there was some alcohol. Flavor was very zesty. An odd word, but I found a certain spicy lemon zest to again work it’s way to the forefront amidst the more typical heavier flavors in such a brew. Very well rounded and complex. Mouthfeel had a certain creaminess often not found in the Belgians accompanying some alcohol-strong carbonation. Excellent. 7/5/08 So I just had this again, rerated it, and came up with exactly the same score...Definitely the highlight is the unbelievably creamy mouthfeel that exhibitis rich, sweet malt without ever approaching cloying or sticky.

Dark brown pour with a decent head. Aroma of dark fruity malt, some figs, raisins. Flavor is rich and filled with dark fruit notes; fig, raisin, dates, some brandy-like notes. An excellent, spicy brew and deceptively smooth at 10%.

Pours black with a thick off white head. Aroma of sweet sweet malts, sour apples, and sour grapes. Flavor of malt, apple, grape, raisin, blood like minerals, and spice. Finishes lightly carbonated with an alcohol burn.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a full head. Rich, sweet aroma and flavor. Hint of raisin and a slightly sour aftertaste. Nice smooth, creamy texture.

Aging well with it’s vinous character growing amongst the assortment of spices found in the Fisherman’s Ale. Toffee and Molasses mix well with chocolate and dark fruits to create a dark ale. Huge white head. Great scent of bread, malt, roast, and flowers. Very thick and full going down and sweet and tasty as the lasting impression. - The danish version is excellent as well.

2006 bottle from Beerworld of Largo, FL. Very dark brown in color, almost black with a medium-large brown head. Complex and somewhat challenging aroma- vinous with dark fruits- raisins, red wine grapes, musty basement- yeasty, a moderate amount of dry chocolate, molasses, spices. Taste is moderately sweet with molasses, figs, raisins, dry baker’s chocolate, spices, and bread (yeast). Well attenuated, with a medium body like other dark belgian strong ales. Only slight alcohol perceived. Finishes lightly fruity, lightly sweet (caramel) and spicy. awesome belgian strong, one of the best I have had.
