kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA Dec 7, 2007 2006, rated 11/10/07: Hazy dark brown w/ a huge lasting light beige head. Great lacing & legs. Peppery yeast, mild ginger, light smoky phenolic, anise, and raisiny esters. Also earthy w/ hints of semi sweet dark chocolate! Raisins turn to prunes as it warms and had toasty and bready aroma overtones after it warms. Well balanced just to sweet up front w/a dry finish. Strong dark fruit presence throughout; Peppery yeast, toasted malt, brown sugar, caramel is very deep! Some licorice flavor. Aftertaste is semi sweet, yeasty, licorice, and herbal hops. Lighter medium body, smooth, well hidden alcohol, but finishes dry due to alcohol. WOW! Very nice beer! Aging may help it dry out a little bit, but nicely complex! drseamus (103), Troy, New York, USA Dec 4, 2007 In my mind, this is tied with Westy 12 for my favorite quad. I’m heading to Belgium in two weeks and I will definitely do a side by side tasting to determine the winner.
A: This is a great looking beer. The perfect amount of mocha colored head topping a very dark brown body. There was some yeast that found its way into the second glass, but the first one was very clear. The head retention is amazing.
S: There are a bunch of aromas emanating from the glass including raisins, prunes, cherries, malt, alcohol, yeasty esters. It is a very inviting aroma and everything is blended nicely.
T: This beer is crazy smooth. It tastes like someone got a blender and threw in raisins, chocolate, dark sugars, prunes and just a touch of alcohol and pressed puree. I can’t taste barely any of the 10% alcohol that is in it.
M: Very smooth with low carbonation fits nicely with its medium/heavy body. It has a thick feel, but somehow isn’t really a heavy body.
D: This is a phenomenal beer. One of the best I’ve had in a while. I could drink this all day long. jalichio999 (502), Brazil Nov 30, 2007 Garrafa. Coloração preta/marrom, com creme bege razoável. Carbonatação alta. Encorpada. Complexa. Notas de malte torrado/caramelo, café e frutas vermelhas. Lembra Unibroue Trois Pistoles. Álcool presente, mas bem inserido. Idem quanto ao amargor. Sedimentos no fundo. Baita cerveja! brianprentiss (473), Portland, Oregon, USA Nov 28, 2007 beautiful ale, lasting wonderful taste and smell. from bottle, brick store pub, decatur, ga. ratman197 (3139), Arvada, Colorado, USA Nov 28, 2007 Bottle poured a hazy reddish brown with a large lasting amber head. Aromas of carmel, spice, fruitiness, light choclate and a hint of vanilla. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, spice, fruitiness and light cocoa with a smooth lingering spiced finish. Immy (1912), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Nov 27, 2007 11.2 oz bottle, with Trooper11 in lovely Groton, CT. Gushed a bit - pours a murky brown with a dense, creamy, light brown head. Sweet and spicy nose, dark fruits and molasses, caramel and allspice. Warms even as you take the aroma in. Medium bodied, smooth satin mouthfeel. Spicy date and plum, some fig, a bit of booze. A light woodiness is noted, particularly toward the finish. Simply excellent. Trooper11 (464), Suffolk, Virginia, USA Nov 27, 2007 Number 400 with my friend Immy in Groton CT. 11.2 oz bottle. Use caution when opening, not very cold yet lost a bit on the counter due to unexpected gush. Pours a dark dark brown with dense growing tan head. Very complex yet inviting aroma of molasses, plums, brown sugar and other dark fruit. Alcohol aroma very apparent telling you to proceed with caution. Heavy body, dark fruit and molasses flavor, like a heavy syrup for your flap jacks. Definitely want to take your time and enjoy this beauty. Sip slowly, nice brown sugar aftertaste, the alcohol is warming on this cold Connecticut night yet is smooth and easy to drink. Very impressive. dkoonce (880), People’s Republic of Athens, Ohio, USA Nov 27, 2007 Bottle, 2006. Pours a deep, dark brown, with a thick tan head that fades slowly. Mostly chocolate aroma, with alcohol, malt, molasses and hops as well. Rich and creamy, with definite chocolate flavors. Sweet and long finishing.
