Haslinger (640), Syracuse, New York, USA Nov 26, 2007 Updated: Jan 24, 2008Big props to IlanMan for bringing me this back from Denmark. Poured a dark chocolate brown. One of the best beers I have ever tasted. Very dessert like beer. Tasted like chocolate and maple/ Very very good minch25 (346), Columbus, Ohio, USA Nov 24, 2007 Updated: Jan 8, 20092006 bottle.
appearance: very active (despite sitting still in my basement for 9+ months), pours dark brown, but large khaki head of very fine bubbles that lasts forever. aroma: licorice(?), chocolate fudge cake, carrot cake. tastes great, a lot of body, very creamy, chocolate mousse, molasses, moderate chocolate sweetness; "dessert in a bottle" is apt. Sturdy warm alcohol backbone, without being boozy, along with a fabulous wood note in the finish as it warms up. Something incredibly distinctive about this beer; I haven’t found anything else at all similar yet. Beaver (587), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Nov 24, 2007 11.2 oz bottle, dated 2006. Pours a dark brown with a huge fizzy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass. This is darker and has more carbonation than the Danish version.
The aroma is very subdued. Light chocolate malts and a little dark fruit, leather and alcohol.
The flavor is smooth rich chocolate malts and some dark fruit with some alcohol and enough bitterness to balance it and give it a dry finish. Some spices come out as it warms. The mouthfeel is medium with sparkly carbonation.
Overall, a nice dessert beer. I think I prefer the Danish version slightly - it’s a little more complex. I do like the decadent flavors of this version a little more though even though they are not as complex. The aroma in this one was not very present compared to the Danish. And this one is thinner. While both are dessert type beers, they are quite a bit different.
MaxxDaddy (261), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Nov 18, 2007 Bottle, 2006 version, for the BIG 100 (not to mention #500 for this beer)!! It only took me about a year and a half, but I finally made it. Thanks to everyone I’ve traded with for the awesome brews along the way. Of course, big ups to the NY/NJ metro crew, for welcoming me into the cool kids club and having good times with good brews. Let’s get on to rating, shall we?
Pours dark brown with a monstrous off-white head. A bit darker than the Danish variety, and exactly the opposite in the head department. Aroma was big on the malts; caramel and dark fruits. I also thought I caught a bit of smoke in there; was not expecting that. Taste was very sweet as well, caramel and raisins as the major players. I didn’t pick up as much spice as the other version. Sticky mouthfeel with a fruity, sweet finish. While certainly a very good beer, I can’t say I was blown away, which i guess is a weird thing to say about a 4.0 beer, but there you have it. gunnfryd (3539), Kristiansand, Norway Nov 8, 2007 Bottle. Red brown colour with tan head. Aroma is licorice, caramel. Flavour is balanced, cellar notes, caramel, licorice, dried fruits, spices. Very nice beer. Aubrey (2773), Denver, Colorado, USA Nov 5, 2007 (2006 bottle) Deep brown with a yellowish-tan head. Fresh yeast aromas wafted from the glass. Smooth, weighted texture with just the right amount of carbonation. Big alcohol was hidden well but the soothing warmth let me know it was there. Incredible, complex flavor was really tasty: sugary toffee, fresh bread dough, raisins, dates, plums, dried apricots, brown sugar and a touch of maple. Slight grassy bitterness seemed to fit well and balance things out. Aromas weren’t turned up all the way, but they were very pleasant and enjoyable nonetheless. Great beer. golubj (1275), Sunnyvale, California, USA Oct 27, 2007 Bottle at the Blind Tiger, split with others. Aroma of dark fruit, slightly roasted malt, some candy sugar, and spices. The flavor was a nearly perfect mixture of fruity malt, spices, and roastedness. Smooth and delicious. Dogbrick (2816), Columbus, Ohio, USA Oct 26, 2007 Sampled at the Odds and Ends Tasting II on 10/19/07 (2006 bottle): This beer pours in a lively way and is a deep brown color with a thick beige head that dissipates slowly. Sticky rings of lacing. Dark fruit, bready malt and sweet spice aromas intermingle nicely. Medium body with a refreshing complexity about it. Flavors of raisins, roasted malt, chocolate and spices are all present. The finish is fruity with a lingering spice and malt aftertaste. One of the better beers I have had lately.
