In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Blistering barnicles! I was not expcting this to be so fufilling, but the overall totality of the beer is impressive, a leatherly, slightly sweet swell, and dark opaque hue with a lingering brown swirl of cirrus head. medium sweetness, medium body, sticky, soft carbonation, mellow finish like fig. Ahoy! When do we set sail?

Bottle, from 2014. Brown color. Medium-big head with decent dose of lacing. Aroma of nuts, dark fruits, toast and maybe chocolate. In flavor again dark fruits, banana, rum with some honey and peppery notes. Sweet but have decent hop character. Not so much based on bitternes more based on flavor. 10% alc. Wow. If I was guessing I would tell it is more like 6-7%. I tried beers with 6% alcohol that have more alcohol character than this one. Overall: good beer, easy drinkable for its 10%. And if they are using t-58 yeast(which in my opinion is some kind of bad yeast, it is maybe not bad but I dont like it), what they say that they are using, you must respect this beer even more. Probably best beer in the world with that kind of the yeast.

Lovely dark brown colour, clear but almost opaque, shiny. Decent tan head. Full, creamy body, with soft carbonation. Aroma has banana, malt and dried fruits. Taste takes it up a level, with rum and raisin, salted caramel, soy, vanilla and port. Which can only add up to something very nice.

2014 Lotto 4016040714. Corpo medio-pieno, ben carbonata, molto astringente.

Draft at MastroBirraio in Trieste. 2014. Deep brown, tall tan soapy head. Sweet, soft caramel, lots of banana, touch of coffee. Sweet, complexity is hinted at, good base but not as impressive as special editions demonstrate. Nice.

2011 vintage. 11.2 ounce bottle purchased at fourteen months ago at Brothers Provisions in San Diego ($7.00). POURS a dark brown hue with rusty highlights (with lots of floaties visible in bright light) and a half finger of tan foam. AROMA of rich sweet toffee, milk chocolate liqueur, fragrant pipe tobacco, molasses, port, dark fruit, and light holiday spice. FLAVOR of sticky dark toffee, nutty caramel, port, dates, raisin, "woody" milk chocolate, mild spice, brown sugar, and molasses. Not really cloying but a bitter over sweet. Holds the high ABV well without being too heavy. I had a 2009 vintage a couple year ago that I had aged, but my father-in-law just pulled it from the fridge one day and drank it one day when he was visiting (he’s not into craft beer by the way). So I got a new bottle and aged it. Not sure how this would be when "fresh" but it’s excellent with four years on it, though I found that I do slightly prefer the Reserva as well as the Pannepeut (still looking for that Grand Reserva). Rating #1800. 2010. 330ml bottle. Poured a murky, slightly particulate, deep - near opaque, in fact - brown with a large though mostly fading tan head. Rich aromas of rum, raisin and prune. Some chocolate, yeasty complexities and caramelised sugar. Tastes just as good whilst being both smooth and showing power. Full-bodied, soft to medium carbonation and finishes long combining a roasty, liquorice-toned bitterness and a sweet, dried fruit accent. At once both intense and complex yet balanced.
