COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Blistering barnicles! I was not expcting this to be so fufilling, but the overall totality of the beer is impressive, a leatherly, slightly sweet swell, and dark opaque hue with a lingering brown swirl of cirrus head. medium sweetness, medium body, sticky, soft carbonation, mellow finish like fig. Ahoy! When do we set sail?

Pours a black beer with a medium beige head. Smells of burnt malts, coffee, chocolate. Tastes malty bitter. Leaves a fine gentle palate composed of malty (burnt) bitterness and candy sugar. Great balanced beer! No wonder this classic for Belgian beer lovers.

2014 vintage. Pours dark brown with average light brown creamy head. Heavy toasted malty aroma with notes of coffee, caramel and cookie. Moderate hoppy aromas with orange. Yeasty aromas with cheese and broth. Notes of cinnamon, prune and gingerbread. Heavy sweet taste, long finish with medium bitter, some acidic and salt. Medium to full body with almost creamy texture, carbonation is soft.

330 mL bottle poured into a goblet. 2010 vintage. Very dark brown. Almost like a light stout. Some light penetrates at the edges, but it’s a dark quad for sure. Nice khaki head with no lacing on the glass and very few bubbles once the head recedes. Outrageous smell. Caramel, dark fruits, roasted malts, bananas, everything. So complex, so delicious smelling. It even has a hint of leather, much like an old ale. The malt complexity is amazing. Taste is not quite as complex as the smell, but still fantastic. The caramel is a bit more dominant and the fruit flavors aren’t as pronounced, but still present. Those earthy, leathery smells translate into an earthy bitterness in the finish. Remarkably easy to drink (and dangerously so) as a 10% quad. A little dry, but not too much. Medium heavy bodied, but not a bit syrupy. Slightly boozy, but not overpowering. A fascinating and very different take on the style.

From Boone (Nieuwpoort)

Bottle share thanks to Fergus for the 2009 and Scopey for 2010. Poura a murky brown with an off white head. Smells musty and tich fruit. Tastes like a liquidised Christmas cake your gran went a little overboard on the booze. It’s smooth and very nice

Pours a deep brown with an amber hue. It has no lacing or head retention, which is to be expected due to the high ABV. Smells of molasses and yeast. Has a sweeter taste, heavy on the brown sugar and molasses. A good desert beer, but not a memorable one.
