COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2014 2011. Absolutely gorgeous beer: deep, dark brown that progressively devolves into mahogany, red, orange, and yellow as you get to the edge. Beautiful, substantive tan head and a little lacing. Sweet, seductive aromatics: figs, prunes, toffee, a suggestion of guava, caramel, black cherries. Awesome! The alcohol does prickle inside the nostrils, but the sweet bouquet of fruity esters and sweet malts is irresistible. On the tongue, it’s equally delicious, if less alcoholic. It starts out sweet, toys with the tart for a bit, and has a somewhat dry finish, evoking something like sweet limetta peel (or some other sweet citrus peel anyway). The mouthfeel is truly amazing, with playful carbonation and a medium-to-full body. The overall aftertaste is sweet and fruity, pretty amazing.

2012 version. Completely black in color, with a one finger broad, beige, froth head. Smells of spiced, sweet milk chocolate with a caramel core to it, while also providing a flowery, peppery pull. On top of that settles a hint of hot glue, together with molasses, balanced by earthy, calming malts. Begins with earthy cocoa nibs, cream and toffee. The smooth mouthfeel experiences an addition of bubbly carbonation, which adds to the sweeter toffee presence. Spices become visible in a slightly peppery and licorice fashion, while also compliementing to the sweetness. The balance remains, because of earthy malts, along with hazelnuts and a Coca-Cola note. Finishes with a gentle coffee note, which isn’t bitter at all, due to the more present cane sugar and nougat, accompanied by a tingly spiciness.

Poured 2011 from bottle to glass. Dark hue with fizzy brown head that settled. Aroma is caramel, toffee, honey, licorice, floral. Mouthfeel is nice with a medium body and crisp carbonation. Taste is sweet throughout with a spice astringent following and estery ethanol finish. Overall this is a very nice brew!

2011 bottle. Pours nice and dark, pretty effervescent. Sounds like a soda or some shit. Small ring of brown head. Smells awesome! Deep Belgian sugar and molasses. Little funky on the nose. Tastes so awesome, its more balanced than a strong quad. Definitely glad I got to try this one! Outstanding Belgian ale.

330ml bottle from 2011. Pours dark with very little foam. Amazing smell, spices. Tastes malty with a lot of raisins, spices and dark sugars. A truly amazing beer!

Promising sour taste. Blackish color with little foam. The taste is balanced and sour and with something i can’t put my finger on. Most certainly a beautiful beer, but it doesn’t work for me.

A dark-brown/amber color with small head. Spicy aroma, with berries and some sort of souress. Taste Spicy and full-bodied, a bit tart. Flanders-style I?d say. Very well-balanced and gentle, but still powerfull. The ABV are not noticeable at all. Superb!

Bottle of 33cl, in a Tumbler glass; room temperature. Woaw ! So we’re in front of a beer with a nice and powerful aroma of spices, enhanced by that great taste. It says Belgian strong Ale, but I would say that she’s more like an red/brown beer ! A little bit of a sticky palate. One of the greatest I’ve tasted so far ! Go go go !

Finally rating this. had this a lot of times, but this time it’s the 2013 in a head-to-head with westy and rochefort 33cl bottle. Pours an almost pitch black with almost no head. Aroma has lots of sweet, yeasty esters with prunes, dates, prunes and stuff, but compared to the other beers, this one has american stout-like notes, like sweet tobacco, some cinnamon, slight roast, anis, licorice and caramel malts. Both lots of candy, but also pretty different with the licorice and the tobacco notes. Taste again is sweet, but with lots of exotic dry and almost bitter notes, like again the roast and the tobacco. Low carbonation and nice, full body.
