In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2014 2011. Absolutely gorgeous beer: deep, dark brown that progressively devolves into mahogany, red, orange, and yellow as you get to the edge. Beautiful, substantive tan head and a little lacing. Sweet, seductive aromatics: figs, prunes, toffee, a suggestion of guava, caramel, black cherries. Awesome! The alcohol does prickle inside the nostrils, but the sweet bouquet of fruity esters and sweet malts is irresistible. On the tongue, it’s equally delicious, if less alcoholic. It starts out sweet, toys with the tart for a bit, and has a somewhat dry finish, evoking something like sweet limetta peel (or some other sweet citrus peel anyway). The mouthfeel is truly amazing, with playful carbonation and a medium-to-full body. The overall aftertaste is sweet and fruity, pretty amazing.

brown close to black. spongy foam café au lait good retention being an edge to the surface without leaving a trace of lace too. powerful and complex aroma. notes typical style as dark and sweet fruit like plums, figs and raisins. notes also appear in the background of chocolate, roasted malt, hazelnuts, vanilla and spices like cinnamon. Alcohol appears hopelessly nose but not displeasing. In widening mouth of aromatic sensations, lots of dark fruit, candy, cake, vanilla and spices. Very bodied and creamy, which fills the mouth with easy entry aided by a moderate carbon atypical style.

Color marrón muy oscuro casi negro con capa de espuma marrón mínima. No mucha carbonatación.

Bottle at Moeder Fonteinas. 2015 vintage. Simply awesome stuff, feels like a smooth jagermeister-in-a-brew, loving it... until it starts hitting me hard on the back of the neck :)

Smells of alcohol, fruit, herbs and spices. Completely black with barely any head. Taste is sweet with a lot of fruits, but this is nicely balanced out by the tones of herbs and roasted malts. Aftertaste is liquorice and herbs. Somewhat thick body. Not the best version of this beer, but still amazing.

Aroma: heavily sweet with boozy, wine notes; Appearance: dark red-brown with thin, white head that dissipates quickly; Taste: follows nose; very rich and complex, not too boozy; delicious; Palate: heavy body with long, sweet finish; Overall: excellent example of a belgian; would definitely buy again when I can get it.

330 mL bottle shared with ebone1988. Got this one in a trade with Eddie. The pour is a darker brown/light black with a thicker and creamy light tan head that falls down to a thicker ring. The aroma is surprisingly fruity. There is a heavy grape and ripe fig but to it with minimal malts. It’s a bit winey, and interesting. Definitely not what I was expecting here. The flavor is really deep and complex. There is a good maltiness up front that produces bits of sweet toffee and light chocolate. The figs hold their own and offer a strong darkness to it. The grapes fade from bright and fruity to more of a dark and dry wine addition. It’s complex and good. The mouth feel is a little light and the carbonation is well done. There is a hint of wine on the back end, but the sweet malts and a light roast really balance out the dry finish. This isn’t as good as I was hoping. Overall, it’s not bad.

Bottle shared with koleminer20, for the book. 2011 vintage. Finally. Aroma is caramel, chocolate, grapes, dark fruit, booze, spices, great. Appearance is dark brown, light brown head, viscous. Taste is fruity, caramel, chocolate, dark fruit, wine maybe, dry, sweet, good stuff. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy body, light carbonation, dry dark fruit aftertaste. Overall, this is really quite good.
