In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

tastes a hell of a lot like rochefort 10, only less subtle. a big chewy malty and spicy ale, as brown as a beer can taste brown: gravy, chocolate, mole sauce, brown sugar, etc. rich and opulent to a degree few belgian beers attempt (perhaps why it’s a ratebeer sort of beer) but still dry. the thing that is really cool about it is a kind of winelike fruity sourness that winds the palate up. salty too. plenty of coriander evident, maybe something peppery too. perhaps a bit heavy where i like belgian ales to be zippy and frothy and phenolic.

Blind quad test against Westvleteren 12, Pannepeut, Rochefort 10, St Bernardus 12, St Amatus 12, The Sixth Glass, & Chimay Blue My prefered order was; Pannepot, Rochefort 10, St Amatus 12, Westvleteren 12, St Bernardus, Pannepeut, Sixth Glass and last Chimay. Pours much much darker than the other quads, and has a tan head. Aroma is coffee, raisin, some vanilla wood notes, a bit oak touch, and a lot of dark fruit. Taste is upfront bitter roastiness, but then explode with dark fruit and complexity, this is really good, it has a licorice touch to it, and just has an amazing mouthfeel.

Bottle from Rehills, Jesmond. 2006 Vintage: Drank after 8 years; Black-brown in colour with ruby red highlights. It has very rich red fruit flavours, sherry spicy fruit notes and a warming leather and slight ’wet-paper’ off notes on the finish.

Dark mocha chocolate brown, opaque, with oily residue. Aroma of dusty barnyard followed by saline, and hints of malt. Strongly malta favor with lots of coffee. Palate is full though oily, but despite the strong coffee flavor does not have the astringency of coffee.

Pours opaque chocolate brown. Brown head, dissipates quickly. Aroma is mostly dark malt, coffee. Rich flavor, full body. Long, roasty finish. Carbonation is just right. Very good.

AROMA full of spices, caramel, banana, raisin and sugary notes. some fresh notes of the hops are showing, resinous. APPEARANCE is good, red-brown clear robe with a thin brown foam of regular sized bubbles. Taste is really spicy, coffee, fresh in fruits, but from dry fruits. Really sweet ant a bit sour. Long lasting PALATE of sugary candy taste, medium body of thin texture. average carbonation. OVERALL I was expecting a great beer and was indeed pleased. Super well balanced between the different notes and tastes. One of a kind ! Poured from a 33cl bottle from fridge in Teku glass.

Bottle. Aroma: dried fruits, raisins, little dark malts. Pours deep dark brown colour, beige head. In taste quite sweet, full bodied, same notes as in aroma. Oily texture, alcohol (10%) present as a little warming effect - very well hidden. Bitter finish. Very good beer.
