In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ĎPannepots,í or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fishermanís Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

One of the first beers I tasted, think it must have been 2008. One of my first favorites also. Itís not a top 10 beer for me now, but itís certainly a great brew. Nice dark color, average smell but a complex, full taste.

33 cl bottle; 2006. Dark, opaque brown color with a huge rocky tan head. Aromas of dark fruit, like dates, and roasted malts. Medium body with sweet notes of light stone fruit and treacle. It goes on like that, and the finish is lightly sweet, but nearly dry. It’s not a bitter finish, but it is incredibly tasty. Wonderful ale.

Black, tan head. Sweet burnt malty bitter aroma, some marzipan too. Soft on the tongue. A bit alcoholic, though not punching at its full 10% by any means. Accompanying the burntness is some caramel and some bitter hints too. Finish is fairly burnt, but also soft.
Rerate: 330ml bottle (Koht, Tallinn) (7:4:7:4:13=3.5) Vintage 2016
Very deep red, brief tight reddish tan head. Rich sweetish belgian strong aroma, but a sharp spice jumps out from the soured aspects. Taste has a very sharp acidity compared to the reservas, almost vinegary, this needs mellowing. Oh, well, it was what it was. I can cellar one on the off-chance.

2006 Bottle from Riverís Bend. Poured reddish/brown color with large light brown head that lasted with good lacing. Very complex dark fruit, citrus, caramel and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture. Full complex sweet flavor with solid fruity sweet finish and a small bite of alcohol. Very good standout brew.

Bottle poured a hazy reddish brown with a large lasting amber head. Aromas of carmel, spice, fruitiness, light choclate and a hint of vanilla. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, spice, fruitiness and light cocoa with a smooth lingering spiced finish.

(330ml bottle, RBSG05) Big tan head topped by opaque brown body. Aroma is medium sweet, yeast, raisin, cocoa. Taste is sweet, milk chocolate, light anise. Creamy full body that renders the alcohol virtually invisible.

Bieropholie Private import. 2005: Dark brown ale with little floaties. Thick resilient moka head. Agreeing with colleagues below, this is definitely has a very nice berry aroma, blueberry, with notes of licorice and caramel. In mouth, a nice sweet blueberry, candi sugar and licorice, with smooth alcohol lasting, and lighter bodied than expected. However, this is a teaser and a pleaser.

2006 bottle tasted July 2007. Very dark red-brown with a big, pillowy light brown head. Complex aroma filled with orange, cherry, figs, bubblegum, anise, nutmeg, cinnamon. Sweet, fruity flavour with more than a hint of port, and some licorice and anise in the finish. Itís soft and velvet on the tongue, but the carbonation stings a little. Long lasting malty aftertaste finishes this beauty perfectly.
