COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

This is a classic Belgian Dark strong ale in the vein of the Trappist monks at places like Westvletereen ( XII) and Rochefort (10) and St. Bernardus (Abt 12). A delicious brew indeed. This brew has what all the aforementioned above brews have. Nothing else needs to be said. If you love this genre or beer style, and If you see it buy it and drink it slowly, you won’t be disappointed !!

Inviting aroma of dark malts- cocoa, dark-chocolate alike and deep yeasty profile, but without typical dark fruits esters, just yeasty, a bit reminded me of very malty/yeasty brown ale. And dark caramelized syrupy, brown sugary/ candy overall, as in aroma as in taste. Medium+ sweet, light bitter. Medium+ body, thick, spungee texture, dry and a bit floury finish. After some time sample becomes a bit alcohol toward, but very little. Nice one.

Aromaty bardzo bogate, karmel, ciemne owoce (sliwki, wisnie, banany), suszone owoce (rodzynki, sliwki suszone), przyprawowosc dosc nienarzucajaca sie, zbozowosc, slodowosc, kawa, nawet czekoladowo-kakaowe nuty. Alkohol praktycznie niewyczuwalny. Smak analogiczny - wszystko to czuc. Praktycznie brak goryczki. lekkie rozgrzewanie gardla od alkoholu. dlugie, owocowe, kwaskowate posmaki (jedyny zarzut ktory mi wpada do glowy - zbyt kwaskowate). W ustach pelne, niesamowicie kremowe, gladkie. Bardzo niskie wysycenie. Na chwile obecna: najlepsze piwo jakie mialem okazje pic w zyciu :)

Tasted from bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is raisins, plums, prunes, figs, brown sugar. Taste is similar to aroma with dark fruits, brown sugar, figs, and some vinous flavors. You do get a little alcohol burn. Moderate to heavily sweet with minimal bitterness. Complex and solid belgian beer but not quite as good as the best belgian strongs I've had. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark black. Really good. Much more malty then a normal belgian. Caramel. Some banana. Yeasty. I’m surprised i like this. Tasted at Carter’s bottle share.

330 ml bottle, vintage 2009.
Dark brown body, with a medium, dense, creamy, dark beige head.
Full aroma of dried fruits, nuts, almond, sherry, wine, spices.
Taste isn’t as big as expected, even quite one-dimensional, mostly sweet, with dried fruits, nuts, almond, red wine, spices.
Medium, oily mouthfeel, with a soft carbonation.
Finishes astringent, a bit alcoholic, quite dry, a bit bitter, but not very aromatic, with some nutty and some wine like notes.

Quite disappointing to be honest. Too one-dimensional for my taste. Maybe it wasn’t stored well (bought this about a year ago, 5 years after bottling), or it even doesn’t age as good as the vintage labelling suggests? I don’t know. Will definitely rerate when I get a fresh one.
