In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Truly world class. Holy shiznit. Plum, toffee, and brown sugar espresso. Perfect mouthfeel and long complex finishes that dances on the tongue. The 10 percent abv is completely hidden. There are not that many beers where it is worth the time for a seasoned beer geek to actively seek it out, this is one of them.

Bottle in Amsterdam. Nice black pour with tan head. Lots of fruits in the nose. Taste also of dark berries, plums, coffee, chocolate. Well balanced. Really nice creamy finish.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - opaque black with a nice fawn head. Nose - molasses, burnt bread. Treacle. Taste - sticky molasses bread. Light nuts and chocolate too. Palate - medium to full bodied with a rich creamy texture and a fairly elegant finish. Overall - this is a lovely beer but I really can’t understand how it can be rated as one of the best in Belgium. It doesn’t have extra layers of complexity that I’d expect.

2006 bottle, thought it might have been left too long, but it’s great. Amazing. Dark fruity, chocolate and caramel, very rich and fruity, raisins, lots of yeastiness, marzipan, nutty. Great stuff.

Label reads 2006, though as far as I know they don’t change the recipe. Minimu of white head that does not hold. Dark colour with some red hints when you pour it. Aroma of dark fruits, raisins, plums, caramel, coffee. Creamy palate. Taste is similar to armoa, raisins, plums, dates, caramel, coffee. I notice a lot of things and some complexity, but there’s some coke feel, and the poor head, that tells me my bottle is not in good conditions. I’ll have to taste another one and review it.

330 ml “2015” bottle bought at Craftissimo in Tsim Sha Tsui East.

Looks: Brownish black colour with a thin layer of dark yeast sediments; One-quarter finger head and beige foam which fades in 40 seconds. Good sticky lacing with near zero carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant rich dark malt, with potent alcohol, faint Cognac, raisins, caramel, toffee, coffee, cream, soy sauce, brown sugar, strong Bel yeast, biscuits and faint grass.

Taste: Strong sweet full malt, with strong alcohol, rich cream, burnt toast, cherries, plum, raisins, caramel, sweet toffee, strong spices, strong Bel yeast, lime cordial, moderate bitter hops and light grass.

Body: Full body. Thick and very creamy palate.

Mouth Feel: The first thing that hits you is the strong sweet booze reminiscent of Chimay Blue, only stronger and nicer! Very rich dark malt base, very creamy and smooth. It has strong Stout elements here with lingering burnt toast, coffee, cream, soy sauce (as the beer warms) yet the ester fruitness and spicyness of cherry and dark fruits shine just as brightly. This is just a very recent brew and I have already hit the jackpot!

Hoppiness: Faint grass in nose. Lime cordial and grass in taste. Bitterness is mostly from malt’s burnt toast but complements well with moderate hop astringency for an abrupt, vary sweet-malty finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry. Very creamy, very fruity and sweet boozy to mouth.

Comments: My bottle might had been leaky so there’s not much head nor carbo to speak of, but the aroma and taste are intense on all front - malty, creamy, toasty, fruity, stouty, spicy, and tasty sweet strong booze. A fine blize of senses and, I have found my dream version of sweet-tasting Stout, Belgian style! Need I say more?

Deep brown nearly black body. Medium brownish head. Crazy complex aroma. Dried plum, chocolate, spices, licorice, light vanilla and coffee notes. Flavours as complex. Sweet candy sugar, dried plums, spices, vanilla, licorice, chocolate... Probably more... Long warm .sweet dried fruits finish. Oily body, medium carbo. Splendid beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

0,33 bottle from a friend - Aroma is incredibly complex. Salty liquorice, vanilla, cola, lemon, mandarins, caramel apples with slight spicy aromas. Mouthfeel is nice and well carbonated, and the beer is full bodied. Flavors has roasted malt, crusty toast, spices, christmas pudding, sweet raisins and spices. Really, really nice. Was expecting a thinner body since it’s a belgian ale, but this beer surprised me! Good stuff!

Nesten helt svart, litt lys slipper gjennom i kantene. caffe latte farget skum.

Bottle from Saveur Bière (2014). Small, beige head. Dark brown body. Smells of spices, nuts, vanilla, sugar, yeast. Tastes apricot, nuts, spices, roasted, sugar, coffee, vanilla. Sweet but mostly bitter. My favorite Belgian beer which I belive is at its best after 4-5 years.

330bottle and on tap. Pours almost black with tanned creamy head. Highly complex brew. Lots of dark fruits, berries, dried figs, carob, raisins. A bit of coffee, chocolate, caramel, molases and dark candi syrup. Sweet but nicely balanced. Alcool well hidden, specially on tap and the beer from older bottles properly aged. Probably the closest I have to a favourite beer.
