Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Bottle at Kulminator. Pours with a dark brown color, aromas are of some spice that I cannot name. Some spices in the flavor profile, fruit and a bit of a kick add to the usual caramel and molasses profile. This is unique beer that has a very smooth finish.

This will be a comparison against my review of the Reserva. Read that for the baseline. Altogether better than the Reserva. The flavors in this are just a bit more clear and not muddled whatsoever. While this has no barrel aging characteristics or the wine notes of the Reserva, this is still wonderfully complex with a great spice/brown sugar/raisin taste. Not quite as complex as the Reserva, but the flavors here mesh better and make this a truly delightful beer. Highly recommended.

Very dark beer with a fast to disapear foam. The beer is a tipical struise with strong cnaging flavors and personality. Malt, dark fruit, bitter and dry. Very complex. Very long aftertaste which asks for slow drinking. Another fine struise.

33 cl bottle; 2006. Dark, opaque brown color with a huge rocky tan head. Aromas of dark fruit, like dates, and roasted malts. Medium body with sweet notes of light stone fruit and treacle. It goes on like that, and the finish is lightly sweet, but nearly dry. It’s not a bitter finish, but it is incredibly tasty. Wonderful ale.

Had many Pannepots in Europe, but the one I rated was on tap from Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fŕ in Rome on 7/6. Just a beautiful beer, almost black caramel color with a thick off-white head. Aroma of cocoa, caramel, and dark fruits. Similar taste with additional vineous notes. A beautiful beer that deserves a place along Westy 12, St. Bernardus Abt. 12, and Rochefort 10. Great, great beer.
