COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Dark amber in color with a beige head that leaves a nice lacing around the glass. Smell is of brown sugar, green apple, dark fruit and caramel. Caramel and toffee first greet the tongue, followed by spicy phenols and dark fruit. Medium bodied with medium carbonation and a nice, dry finish. Definitely have to say the regular Pannepot is my favorite vs. the other various aged versions.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a super hazy dark brown-mahogany color with a billowy off white head. The head fades rather slowly over time to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of darker fruit smells with lots of plum, raisin, and fig. Along with the darker fruit smells comes plenty of bready and lightly roasted malt smells. Some yeasty smells as well as some other sweet aromas of a caramel and toffee nature come along as well. A bit of spice of coriander and clove as well as a slightly funky like smell come and linger on the nose creating a rather dark and sweet but slightly funky off aroma to sit on the nose. Taste – The taste begins with a very dark fruit sweet flavor with tons of raisin, fig, plum, and cherry. The sweeter flavors are matched by a bit of a bready and doughy taste with a hint of a chocolate and a bit of roasted malt mixed within. The yeast and spice that were detected in the nose come on more strongly toward the middle of the taste and bring a very nice dimension to the brew, complementing well the sweeter dark fruit flavors of the brew nicely. Some candied sugar flavors and a little bit of a rummy booziness develop on the tongue as the flavors advances, bringing a little bit of warmth to the taste. At the very end, a little bit of earth and a light woody/oaky flavor join the profile which end up leaving a very tasty and somewhat smoother, but robust sweet dark fruit quad flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of thickness and creaminess for a brew of 10 % abv. with a carbonation level that is on the average side as well. The average thickness and carbonation are a nice compromise for the sweeter dark fruit and boozy, oaky, and spiced flavors of the brew and makes for a nice easy drinking, yet slower sipping brew overall. Overall – This is one quite tasty quad. This one is on the tops of my list. Dark fruity, nicely spiced, and yeasted, with a good blend of a warming taste/feel, but all while maintaining a great drinkability and enjoyability. This is quite a nice quad!!

Pours a very dark brown with barely half a finger of beige head. Preserved fruits, raisins, medium roasted malts, sweet licorice and some coffee on the nose. Palate is medium bodied, definetely on the sweet side. Sweet fruits, a hint of acidity and no bitterness. The finish is very long. Very nice. Will try to cellar a few to see how it developes. I think this will be even better in a few years time. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown color with beige medium-lasting head. Aroma is intense, ripe fruits like plums, figues and raisins are present. Chocolate, toasted malts, hazelnuts and spices are also present. Medium-full bodied. Taste is outrageous, very sweet, with toasted malts, caramel, cherries, plums, vanilla and spices. Very balanced, with well integrated alcohol. Dry finish, with some coffee hints. An absolute masterpiece.

Bottle. pour is nearly black with a large brown head that has a reddish tint to it as the bubbles break down and leave a thin light brown layer on top. Aroma is all dark fruit, raisin, cherry, melanoidin bomb. Taste is initially fruity then a light funky tartness comes through, like a tart apple almost. This is a 2010 bottle and here is some definite oxidation and it is the papery kind. Mouthfeel is medium to light, with some smooth alcohol warming in the ears after a couple sips. overall, pretty good, but the tartness and oxidation really prevent this from being world class.

Pours burnt umber with small superficial mocha-head (vanishes within minutes). Very little lacing. Aroma is knock-the-door-down belgian yeast and banana. Raisins, some brown sugar (molasses) and some plum. Melange of competing scents. Glorious and tone is the beer equivalent of a dessert wine. Taste is sweet - one small complaint is that it becomes a little cloying towards the end. Provides everything in the palate that it does in the nose (surprisingly rare). Banana and yeast notes are dominant but the dried fruit is never too far away. Excellent beer that provides the drinker with a conundrum that is unravelled in every sip.

(Botella 330 ml)
