COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2011 Bottle split with Pat. Bottle. Pours deep, deep brown, with a nice beige head. Aroma of raisins, candy apple, scotch, vinegar, malts, yeast, and caramel. Medium body with a warming finish. This beer is extremely well balanced; with flavors perfectly complementing one another.

Finally got to try this Pours a clear dark brown with a big yellowish head. Date-, prune- and alcohol aroma. Big and stable off-white head. Tastes quite sweet of molasses and sirup spiced with dates, figs and prunes. Hint of burnt caramel. A strong effect in the back of the mouth - nice. Medium to high carbonation. Very full beer with a sweet finish

Pour a dark garnet color with a light tan head and decent lacing. Aroma is fruity with red apples, cherry cough drop, some banana even and bready yeast. Taste is dark fruit like raisin and plums, cherries and bread. Nice and flavorful Belgian.

2014 bottle. Pours a dark brown, garnet color. Aroma is full of fruit; banana, cherry, apple, tropical and dark, with some bread and a hint of alcohol. Taste is more dark fruits, raisin and prune, with some red apple. Really develops on your tongue. Has some roast and chocolate. Medium mouthfeel. Really interesting and dense flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

In short: yeasty liquour beer. Aroma is incredibly rich and complex, and resembles uncooked flour, creamy crown, taste is strong and sweet/liquory, aftertaste is complex and kind of bitter.

Touch of tobacco and spices. Sweet taste; flavour of both sweet and bitter chocolates, a bit piney and resinous. Little hops. Marssala or portwine finish. Rich, velvety MF, full-bodied. Nice beer. I have a distinct impression this is less spiced than the Rochefortoise dark, and hence much sweeter in appearance. Pannepot 2006, Deca Colour: Huge yellow-brown head, near black beer. 4/5. Nose: My co-taster says Coca-Cola, I get hazelnut, sweet, light drop and licorice, as well as some more herbs

330ml bottle served in a Westvleteren chalice. I dunno remember the Edition of my first review. This review is based on 2010 Edition enjoyed at the 26/08/2014. LOT 32255711. Best Before 24.09.2016. A: Pours a deep amber to brown color forming a small to medium beige head. Medium to low retention forming and leaving only few spotty lacings in the glass. A small layer remains for a long time on the top S: Very sweet, malty, spicy and mainly, fruity. Strong notes of caramel, caramel malts, candi sugar, licorice, dry plums, dry raisins, orange zest, vanilla, chocolate, brown bread, earthy hops and wood. Notes of black pepper and coriander. A bit booze in the end. But a very well hidden 10% ABV T: Exactly like the nose. Very sweet upfront. Strong notes of caramel, caramel malts, candi sugar, licorice, dry plums, dry raisins, grapefruit, vanilla, chocolate, brown bread, black pepper. Balanced bitterness in the end. Earthy hops M: Full heavy body. Creamy and molasses. Medium to low carbonation. Sweet, malty and aftertaste with a pleasant earthy bitterness in the back of the tongue O: Perfect drinkability. Perfect Quad. Perfect beer [ BA Review @ 10/17/2009 ]

Dark brown with ruby around the edges. Medium, dense fluffy tan head. Aroma is sweet with mild spices, custard, brown sugar, and dark chocolate. Perhaps even angel food cake. Taste is heavenly! Mild spice, more custard, brown sugar, light roasted malts, liquor, dark ripened fruits and cocoa. Body is thick and rich with strong carbonation and light alcohol warming. Finishes with more light spices, liquor, sweetened malts, rich custard, and sucrose. Light bittersweet chocolate as well.

Poured from bottle into tulip glass. Thick head and dark brownish color. Aroma a little bit pungent with malt and vinegar. Flavor is immediately complex and intriguing. Flat carbonation with a fruity sweetness on the front end mixed with toasty malts, a moderate sourness, and some subtle chocolate. Almost no booziness in the finish. Instead, it ends in a soft saccharine like cola finale. A beer that is hard to pin down and keeps you interested through the whole bottle. Intellectually stimulating.
