Commercial Description:
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

Bottle at RBESG Grand Tasting. Sorry Carlo, its just too sweet for my palate. And I just have problems with sweet beers. Full stop. I love the full spicy, malty aroma. And the rich, plummy fruit on the palate. And the dark chocolate underbelly. Some vinous notes there too. But I can’t get away from the syrupy sweetness. Some rough bitter edges might provide some relief but its so damn smooth too. No doubting its a well put together beer but, ultimately, not really entirely to my taste yet. I’m told the sweetness reduces with age so I guess I’d better try to get some bottles to age. 8/4/6/3/14=3.5
RE-RATE: Bottle, at de Garre, Brugge, April 2008 (2006 vintage). Bottle age makes a lot of difference. Still bags of raisin and prune fruit and big spices but the sweetness has receded to leave a truly luscious and succulent beer. Licorice on the finish. Very yummy (although I’d probably still prefer something a little drier). Score updated.

(Dégusté avec french tickler) Une biere de couleur brune foncé avec un mince collet non collant. Odeur surette, épices, canelle, rubarbe, sucre et un peu de sel. Gout tres crémeux, un peu épicés, sel et un peu d’alcohol.

Chocolatey brown colour and lovely foam make this an enticing looking beer and the enticing aroma makes me want to take an everlasting dive into my duvel glass. Roasty, sweet aroma with raisins and a vinous quality really got me all teary eyed, i had to restrict myself because i was in the company of men. The taste, oh the taste, there is everything in here that I want. The palate is perfectly soft, the rich malty taste, fruits, chocolate, so many notes here that i stop counting and just enjoy the hell out of the experience. So to make a long ramble tolerably short, I am gay for Pannepot.

Edition 2007.
Dark colored brew. Fruity, sweet aroma. Flavor is very nice. Good balanced brew. Smooth, creamy, fruity, sweet and some very nice bitterness to blend it all together. I’m lucky to have some of those for specials days,

App.: Dark brown, some sediments, tiny yet sticky head.

Aromas: Plums, prunes, red grapes, alcohol, salty, red wine mulch, fruity sweet...

Palate: WOW! Creamy, fruity sweetness (nothing artificial), awesome balance, alcohol, full body, salty, perfect carbonation...

Flavors: Cumin, caramel, grapes, alcohol, plums and salty again...

Notes: Amazing brew... best in a while! Perfect all around... stong accross the board!
