In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

06 bottle. Pours a dark cloudy mahogany with clear edges, thin tan head that sticks around for entire drink, decent lacing. Left a decent bit of sediment on glass until almost the end of glass, which I then poured in. Aroma of lightly roasted malt, chocolate, slight coffee, caramel, and alcohol. Flavor matches with the addition of a nice spice profile, yeast, and dried fruits. Alcohol a little more up front than I was expecting, but it doesn’t dominate the drink. Extra sediment toward end gave a bit of a spicier flavor, which I think would have been even better to have for the entire glass. Truly a nice complex brew that I would enjoy to have more often.

Brown colour with remaining laces. Sweet dried fruut aroma. Complex taste with dried fruit, malt and balanced bitterness, well hiding the alcohol.

UPDATED: NOV 15, 2014 01.11.2014, 0,33l bottle (2013) sampled @ Cardinal:
Nice light brown creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet, dried dark fruits, caramel malts, dark sugar, grass, citrus, hints of butterscotch. Taste is slightly dry fruity, citrus, dried dark fruits, alcohol, caramel malts, grass, minerals, burnt caramel. Medium bitterness, slightly dry and watery mouthfeel. Fair enough.

Tasting this very complex beer is an amazing experience. At first fruity and spicy esters (they remind me those of the Fermentis T-58 yeast), then a massive doppelbock caramel aroma soon followed by christmas cake, mature fruit, nuts, then chocolate, and at last bitter coffee. The aftertaste is incredibly clean and not so persisting. The body is lighter than you’d expect. Every sip is different from the following one that I think I’d need at least 3 bottles to really understand this elegant beer and how it plays with its balance between maltiness and "esterness". Hops actually not perceived neither spices added. Very dark color with a medium foam. The alcohol content is just something printed on the label.

Bottle 0,33l. Deep brown color, even black. Medium beige head. In aroma there ale lot of spicy notes, some dried fruits, caramel. Taste is even better! There is caramel, biscuits, fruits, light coffee, spices, a light hoppy finish... it’s very complex! Highly carbonated. Excellent one.

And the God created beer and called it Pannepot! The Aroma is not very strong but the taste is amazing. Regular Pannepot rocks comparing to Vintage one.

33cl @ bottle.
