COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

2010 Bottle. A dark brown to black with big tan Head that is lasting. Aroma is dark dried fruits (raisins, dates, prunes) a whiff of sea salt, big oak character, a syrupy sweetness like a dark fruit jam or something. Flavor follows with a fairly full mouthfeel and flavors of fruit, not quite sticky but syrupy certainly. If I poured it over vanilla ice cream I imagine it would be a phenomenal experience. Flavors add spiciness, peppery, but around that chocolate blackberry or plum first noticed in the nose. Belgian yeast and candy sugars come in a dark molasses kind of way. The kind of beer I’d want to drink off the beach in Nantucket on a cooler August night. Always has been one my true beer loves for many years. This beer so dark and delicate is a dessert on its own and maybe tomorrow’s breakfast shall be another.

Tasted from bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is raisins, plums, prunes, figs, brown sugar. Taste is similar to aroma with dark fruits, brown sugar, figs, and some vinous flavors. You do get a little alcohol burn. Moderate to heavily sweet with minimal bitterness. Complex and solid belgian beer but not quite as good as the best belgian strongs I've had. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark black. Really good. Much more malty then a normal belgian. Caramel. Some banana. Yeasty. I’m surprised i like this. Tasted at Carter’s bottle share.

330 ml bottle, vintage 2009.
Dark brown body, with a medium, dense, creamy, dark beige head.
Full aroma of dried fruits, nuts, almond, sherry, wine, spices.
Taste isn’t as big as expected, even quite one-dimensional, mostly sweet, with dried fruits, nuts, almond, red wine, spices.
Medium, oily mouthfeel, with a soft carbonation.
Finishes astringent, a bit alcoholic, quite dry, a bit bitter, but not very aromatic, with some nutty and some wine like notes.

Quite disappointing to be honest. Too one-dimensional for my taste. Maybe it wasn’t stored well (bought this about a year ago, 5 years after bottling), or it even doesn’t age as good as the vintage labelling suggests? I don’t know. Will definitely rerate when I get a fresh one.

Beczka. Barwa ciemno-bordowa. Brak piany. Aromat czekolady, śliwek, rodzynek. W smaku delikatna czekolada, orzechy, suszone owoce, mam wrażenie jak bym pił pół wytrawne czerwone wino. Niskie wysycenie. Kolejny piwo z browaru Struise, godne polecenia. Niesamowite piwo.

So dark it’s black. The brown head disappears as fast as lightning. Very intense aromas: caramel, chocolate, dates, coffee, cardamom, even HP sauce. Powerful, soft and creamy. The main flavours are sweet, sour and umami. Low carb, long finish. One of the greatest.

Pours dark brown with small head. Aroma: heavy sirup-like aroma of dried fruit, including plums, peaches, grapes, raisins, with a very pleasant rum/bourbon aroma. Taste: very complex, with plums and raisins in the foreground, followed by raisins and a pleasant alcoholic warming effect in the palate. This is a very big and complex beer. Fantastic example of Belgian beer craftsmanship.
