4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2010 Bottle. A dark brown to black with big tan Head that is lasting. Aroma is dark dried fruits (raisins, dates, prunes) a whiff of sea salt, big oak character, a syrupy sweetness like a dark fruit jam or something. Flavor follows with a fairly full mouthfeel and flavors of fruit, not quite sticky but syrupy certainly. If I poured it over vanilla ice cream I imagine it would be a phenomenal experience. Flavors add spiciness, peppery, but around that chocolate blackberry or plum first noticed in the nose. Belgian yeast and candy sugars come in a dark molasses kind of way. The kind of beer I’d want to drink off the beach in Nantucket on a cooler August night. Always has been one my true beer loves for many years. This beer so dark and delicate is a dessert on its own and maybe tomorrow’s breakfast shall be another.

330bottle and on tap. Pours almost black with tanned creamy head. Highly complex brew. Lots of dark fruits, berries, dried figs, carob, raisins. A bit of coffee, chocolate, caramel, molases and dark candi syrup. Sweet but nicely balanced. Alcool well hidden, specially on tap and the beer from older bottles properly aged. Probably the closest I have to a favourite beer.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, from 2014. Brown color. Medium-big head with decent dose of lacing. Aroma of nuts, dark fruits, toast and maybe chocolate. In flavor again dark fruits, banana, rum with some honey and peppery notes. Sweet but have decent hop character. Not so much based on bitternes more based on flavor. 10% alc. Wow. If I was guessing I would tell it is more like 6-7%. I tried beers with 6% alcohol that have more alcohol character than this one. Overall: good beer, easy drinkable for its 10%. And if they are using t-58 yeast(which in my opinion is some kind of bad yeast, it is maybe not bad but I dont like it), what they say that they are using, you must respect this beer even more. Probably best beer in the world with that kind of the yeast.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Lovely dark brown colour, clear but almost opaque, shiny. Decent tan head. Full, creamy body, with soft carbonation. Aroma has banana, malt and dried fruits. Taste takes it up a level, with rum and raisin, salted caramel, soy, vanilla and port. Which can only add up to something very nice.

2014 Lotto 4016040714.
Tonaca di frate con riflessi caramello, schiuma beige poco persistente.
Aroma acetico forte, cacao amaro, caramello, vino liquoroso, uva fermentata, leggermente legnosa.
Al palato stesse caratteristiche, la gradazione alcolica è sorprendentemente ben nascosta anche se riscalda la bevuta in modo impeccabile.
Corpo medio-pieno, ben carbonata, molto astringente.

Draft at MastroBirraio in Trieste. 2014. Deep brown, tall tan soapy head. Sweet, soft caramel, lots of banana, touch of coffee. Sweet, complexity is hinted at, good base but not as impressive as special editions demonstrate. Nice.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2011 vintage. 11.2 ounce bottle purchased at fourteen months ago at Brothers Provisions in San Diego ($7.00). POURS a dark brown hue with rusty highlights (with lots of floaties visible in bright light) and a half finger of tan foam. AROMA of rich sweet toffee, milk chocolate liqueur, fragrant pipe tobacco, molasses, port, dark fruit, and light holiday spice. FLAVOR of sticky dark toffee, nutty caramel, port, dates, raisin, "woody" milk chocolate, mild spice, brown sugar, and molasses. Not really cloying but a bitter over sweet. Holds the high ABV well without being too heavy. I had a 2009 vintage a couple year ago that I had aged, but my father-in-law just pulled it from the fridge one day and drank it one day when he was visiting (he’s not into craft beer by the way). So I got a new bottle and aged it. Not sure how this would be when "fresh" but it’s excellent with four years on it, though I found that I do slightly prefer the Reserva as well as the Pannepeut (still looking for that Grand Reserva).
