COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the early 1900s, the village of De Panne, close to the French border, was famous for two things -- the ‘Pannepots,’ or fishing boats, that could be seen along the coast, and the unique dark ale enjoyed by the local fishermen. Our Old Fisherman’s Ale is a tribute to these hardy sailors and their rich, flavorful brew. Unfiltered. Unpasteurized. Bottle-conditioned in 33cl and 75cl.

2010 Bottle. A dark brown to black with big tan Head that is lasting. Aroma is dark dried fruits (raisins, dates, prunes) a whiff of sea salt, big oak character, a syrupy sweetness like a dark fruit jam or something. Flavor follows with a fairly full mouthfeel and flavors of fruit, not quite sticky but syrupy certainly. If I poured it over vanilla ice cream I imagine it would be a phenomenal experience. Flavors add spiciness, peppery, but around that chocolate blackberry or plum first noticed in the nose. Belgian yeast and candy sugars come in a dark molasses kind of way. The kind of beer I’d want to drink off the beach in Nantucket on a cooler August night. Always has been one my true beer loves for many years. This beer so dark and delicate is a dessert on its own and maybe tomorrow’s breakfast shall be another.

Promising sour taste. Blackish color with little foam. The taste is balanced and sour and with something i can’t put my finger on. Most certainly a beautiful beer, but it doesn’t work for me.

A dark-brown/amber color with small head. Spicy aroma, with berries and some sort of souress. Taste Spicy and full-bodied, a bit tart. Flanders-style I?d say. Very well-balanced and gentle, but still powerfull. The ABV are not noticeable at all. Superb!

Bottle of 33cl, in a Tumbler glass; room temperature. Woaw ! So we’re in front of a beer with a nice and powerful aroma of spices, enhanced by that great taste. It says Belgian strong Ale, but I would say that she’s more like an red/brown beer ! A little bit of a sticky palate. One of the greatest I’ve tasted so far ! Go go go !

Finally rating this. had this a lot of times, but this time it’s the 2013 in a head-to-head with westy and rochefort 33cl bottle. Pours an almost pitch black with almost no head. Aroma has lots of sweet, yeasty esters with prunes, dates, prunes and stuff, but compared to the other beers, this one has american stout-like notes, like sweet tobacco, some cinnamon, slight roast, anis, licorice and caramel malts. Both lots of candy, but also pretty different with the licorice and the tobacco notes. Taste again is sweet, but with lots of exotic dry and almost bitter notes, like again the roast and the tobacco. Low carbonation and nice, full body.

Bottle at home. Aged for almost one year. Pours dark brown, almost black with almost no head. Smells of dried fruits, spices and coffee. Taste is lean, spicy. Low carbonation. I find this beer very pleasant!

Pours a very dark brown with big fizzy tan head that turns to a very fine ring around the glass. Aroma is brown sugar, candied sugar, dark dried fruits(plums, dates, rasins, prunes) and a touch of molasses. Flavour is dark dried fruits, rasins, dates, plums, prunes, candied sugar, molasses, brown sugar, a touch alcohol warmth, mild chocolate and a faint bitterness.

Black color, minimal head. Aroma is very complex with notes of caramel, chocolate, nuts, banana, vanilla, wood. Same in the taste with a predominent sweetness first, counterbalanced by a nice bitterness. Low carbonatioon and oily texture. Definitely one of my top 3 beers!
