This ale was brewed back in 2008, and in collaboration with brew master Ryohei Sugawa San from Rio Brewing & Co. Our goal was to brew a Belgian dark golden blond quadrupel with an enormous potential of aromas and flavors, and added complexity due to oak barrel aging. Bourbon barels from Kentucky were chosen due to their very special soft roast quality and noble vanilla flavors. Year upon year, different quality controls were executed, and we finally decided to bottle condition this very special ale in May 2012. Another three moths of cold maturing was done at the brewery, so we could be sure about the absolute quality before releasing to our customers.

Rio Reserva 2009 - there should be another listing as it’s incomparable with more recent batches, 75 cl bottles without cork or the latest 33cl bottles released 2014. Note to Ratebeer! ;) 75cl corked bottle of 2009. Pours dark orange reddish with great head (poured in crystal big wine glass : major difference than snifter). Aroma is all over the place! Vanilla, caramel, raisins and a certain softness in the combined aromas. Also some mellow whiskey in the nose, and taste. Full on flavour experience with beautiful esters developed over the last 6 years. Butterscotch caramels, raisin, wood, date, herbs, nuts, booze in aftertaste. All these flavours combined linger on. This is truly one of the best Struise beers that balances out over the years, gets less boozey and flavours more pronounced.

Strong fruity aroma. At some point it made me think of strawberry. It might be thanks to the wine barrel. The bourbon is rather strong though. Not too powerful despite the 10.5 ABV. Creamy.

bouteille de 2011. Bière bonne en bouche, très crémeuse. Elle reste balancé, avec elle passe bien et on ne goûte pas d’alcool. je la trouve même légère.

330ml bottle @Cimmeria, Oviedo. 15-01-2015.
BBD: 2019.
In short: wood character ale.
Pours amber to copper, hazy, with little off white head. Moderate head retention, some lacing. Some funny nose, fruity, wood, resins, chemical. Medium body, average carbonation, oily texture. Taste is quite sweet, vinous, wood, malty, toffee, fruity. Weel balanced, enjoyable despite the nose.

My Bottom Line:
Brandy-laced nuts and caramel are generously offered by this warming dessert brew.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A crown of foam tops the darkness.
-Alcohol is a bit too present for my liking.
-The tiny bubbles help make the mouthfeel appear heavier.
-Caramel flavors and alcohol heat are both lengthy.

On tap at Farmhouse Tap and Grill, Burlington.

2011 bottle. Appearance is light brown/amber, a two-finger off-white head which settles into half a finger and remains. A fair bit clings to the glass. Aroma- vanilla and bourbon is prominent, very vinous, sweet fruits, apple, malty, hints of caramel and sweet bread, boozy. Smells big, and complex. Taste- also complex. Boozy cherries, port, red wine, sugar, caramel, treacle, blackberry notes, vanilla, slight oakiness, bourbon, very fruity, not quite as full in the mouth but still syrupy, dark fruit towards the end, the alcohol definitely comes through. Very interesting, good.

Bottle. Light brown with medium sized off white head. Cognac, dark sherry, clementines, canned peaches, marzipan, apricot, orange cake, lots more. Very complex stuff, lots of wine and liquor notes, but also massively fruity. Full bodied with medium carbonation. Like nothing I have had before. Great stuff.
