COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ale was brewed back in 2008, and in collaboration with brew master Ryohei Sugawa San from Rio Brewing & Co. Our goal was to brew a Belgian dark golden blond quadrupel with an enormous potential of aromas and flavors, and added complexity due to oak barrel aging. Bourbon barels from Kentucky were chosen due to their very special soft roast quality and noble vanilla flavors. Year upon year, different quality controls were executed, and we finally decided to bottle condition this very special ale in May 2012. Another three moths of cold maturing was done at the brewery, so we could be sure about the absolute quality before releasing to our customers.

330 ml bottle, pours brown with a small, frothy, off white head. Aroma is caramel, oatmeal, strawberry, prune, red cherry. The oaking adds to the base with red wine and whisky notes adding to the already complex aromas balancing together. Medium bodied with a creamy texture, finish is lightly bitter, very smooth, carbonation is fine and lasting.

I don’t know if this goes for all the bottles of this beer, but this bottle is obviously infected with a fruity strain of Brett. Overall the beer is estery with strawberry aromas complimented really nicely with vanilla from oak and some caramel. The aroma hints to a little sourness, but it’s not there in the taste. It’s rather sweet and bitter. Very pleasant, intriguing and special.

My favourite style taken on from a new angle - yet again - by my favourite Belgian brewery. Poured into a Westmalle chalice. The head is smaller than required by the glass, but hangs around. Beer pours a murky brown, yet lets through a lot of light. A seasoned drinker would guess that it will turn out moderately sweet. Smell immediately gives hint of sweet candi sugar yeast with a beautiful vanilla oak complement. Some stone fruits and green grapes appear as well of scents of honey-sweetened Kentucky bourbon. The taste has the sweetness, but there is a real grape flavour carried through the body. Belgian brown sugar sweet yeast mixes with caramel bourbon and hints of dessert wine. There is butterscotch and Christmas chocolate orange in there too, picture a Scottish Christmas dessert. In spite of the overall sweetness, the complexity allows bourbon and wine flavours to come through. Brown sugar with a lot of barley wine characteristics - a note to its American parentage. Barely a dash of alcohol, in spite of an 11% abv. A very smooth blend which beautifully carries an array of flavours. The taste will hang around long after finishing. Beautifully exhibits the flavours. A masterpiece. Overall, not the strongest barrel-tasting beer I've ever had, but that is due to the fact that Struise produces such a wide array of flavours that it exists to complement the wide array of flavours on offer, rather than presenting the sole flavour in itself. Having heard little of this beer before, I have been highly pleasantly surprised and it now ranks as one of my Struise favourites. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
