COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ale was brewed back in 2008, and in collaboration with brew master Ryohei Sugawa San from Rio Brewing & Co. Our goal was to brew a Belgian dark golden blond quadrupel with an enormous potential of aromas and flavors, and added complexity due to oak barrel aging. Bourbon barels from Kentucky were chosen due to their very special soft roast quality and noble vanilla flavors. Year upon year, different quality controls were executed, and we finally decided to bottle condition this very special ale in May 2012. Another three moths of cold maturing was done at the brewery, so we could be sure about the absolute quality before releasing to our customers.

Bottle. Orangy.. light brown hazy. Oaky, flanders red notes, malty, light straw, ripe fruity, bit dried apricots fruity nose. Quite a sweet dried sugary feel to it. Full bodied, soft, very smooth, rich texture. Lots of sweets, teeth almost sticking together, but enough bitters/acids to wipe the finish clean. Med long finish with, again, dried apricots and other stone fruits. Wouldn’t say its a quad though. A fruity sweet-malt- heavy flanderish thing more of.

Bottle at home (brewed 2011, bottled August 2014, 10.5% alc vol., Lot n: 0602201130092014). Pours a clear reddish golden amber with a small beige head. Sweet aroma of caramel, malts, bourbon, alcohol, dark fruits and vanilla. Taste is sweet malty, bourbon, sweet dark fruits, caramel, vanilla, hint of yeast. Sweet malty bourbon aftertaste with warming alcohol. Bit sharp in the alcohol still, perhaps even better with time. But very nice and well balanced.

Tasted on 12/1/12 from a bottle. Pours hazy bright orange with a thin white lace head that slowly disappears. The nose is sweet caramel malt and a nice Belgian yeast note with clover honey. The flavor is the same with candied orange peel and a decent bit of bitterness. The body is full with syrup, light carbonation, and a long honeyed, caramel, and lightly bitter finish.

Bottle 2011 version. Unlcear chestnut brown with a small diminishing off white head. Brown sugar and wooden red wine in the nose. Pleasantly warming, some bourbon, dark dried fruit, caramelized fruit, light wood, apricot, nuts. Red wine towards the finish. Full bodied, sweet but not sticky, light acidic. Good complexity and balance.

Lekker!

Bottle. Darker amber in color, frothy off-white head. Oak barrel notes, tart red berries, some sweetness and bit vanilla in aroma, vinous vibes are present as well. Velvety soft mouthfeel, nice. Ripe dark dried fruits, some sweet syrup and a nice mix of vanilla and oak in taste. Dark fruity and malty finish with a soft spicy biting in the end.

Rio Reserva 2009 - there should be another listing as it’s incomparable with more recent batches, 75 cl bottles without cork or the latest 33cl bottles released 2014. Note to Ratebeer! ;) 75cl corked bottle of 2009. Pours dark orange reddish with great head (poured in crystal big wine glass : major difference than snifter). Aroma is all over the place! Vanilla, caramel, raisins and a certain softness in the combined aromas. Also some mellow whiskey in the nose, and taste. Full on flavour experience with beautiful esters developed over the last 6 years. Butterscotch caramels, raisin, wood, date, herbs, nuts, booze in aftertaste. All these flavours combined linger on. This is truly one of the best Struise beers that balances out over the years, gets less boozey and flavours more pronounced.
