This ale was brewed back in 2008, and in collaboration with brew master Ryohei Sugawa San from Rio Brewing & Co. Our goal was to brew a Belgian dark golden blond quadrupel with an enormous potential of aromas and flavors, and added complexity due to oak barrel aging. Bourbon barels from Kentucky were chosen due to their very special soft roast quality and noble vanilla flavors. Year upon year, different quality controls were executed, and we finally decided to bottle condition this very special ale in May 2012. Another three moths of cold maturing was done at the brewery, so we could be sure about the absolute quality before releasing to our customers.

33cl bottle at home. Clear amber brown with a small slightly off-white head. Full body with low carbonation. Quite sweet with some malty bitterness. Caramel, vanilla, bourbon, ripe fruits, oak and raisin. A well balanced BA quadruple.

Amber colour with off-white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, vanilla and ripe fruit. Taste is sweet and a bit boozy, canned fruit, wood and bourbon. Good carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a reddish orange with a classy, beige head. Aroma is vinous, oaky, rather berry. Very much white wine, some vanilla. Later on the vanilla and whiskey become more dominant. Taste is quite sweet, the bourbon dominates here: Vanilla, whiskey, oak. Light vinous touch on the background. Some smooth salty liquorice, not rough like in imperial stouts. The alcohol is well hidden, but so is the beer. The barrel flavors dominate so if that’s your thing...

Rio Reserva uitgeschonken in De Struise Brouwers bierglas.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Strong smell of dried fruit and bourbon. I also get some vanilla and oak. Bourbon dominates the taste but I also get some dried fruit and vanilla. A bit boozy. Very sweet. Very drinkable!

Bottle 2011 (seems to be quite different to the 2008 in the description above). Nose is bourbon, vanilla, spice, undercut with a dry yeast, caramel, orange, cherry, cola, sugar and slight cellar notes. A new sniff gives more brown sugar, brandy, apples, spice. So, so much going on. Taste brown sugar, leading to bourbon and vanilla, nut, malt, cherry, spice. Apple, dry yeast, oak, orange, a few sips in the vinous notes from the wine barrel aging emerge in the finish. More sips give plum, raisins, sticky fruit cake, dark syrup. As I step away and return I get oranges a hint of marmalade. I often find bourbon aged beers, are dominated by barrel to the detriment of everything else. This beer is extraordinarily balanced with a dryer finish undercutting the sweetness from the bourban,

Amber body. Off-white creamy head. Aroma of chocolate malts. Flavour of dark fruit, caramel. Aggressive aftertaste of alcohol and spices. Just a bit too much.

330ml bottle. Dark brown with a tan head which drops quickly. Lovely aroma of alcohol, vanilla, dried fruit and dark oak barrels. Great complex taste that bites immediately in the mouth. In the beginning, the taste is sweet as dried plums and caramel, then comes a prominent taste of alcohol and sweet red wine, long and warm aftertaste of honey and bourbon. Overall booze is a dominant flavor.
