COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ale was brewed back in 2008, and in collaboration with brew master Ryohei Sugawa San from Rio Brewing & Co. Our goal was to brew a Belgian dark golden blond quadrupel with an enormous potential of aromas and flavors, and added complexity due to oak barrel aging. Bourbon barels from Kentucky were chosen due to their very special soft roast quality and noble vanilla flavors. Year upon year, different quality controls were executed, and we finally decided to bottle condition this very special ale in May 2012. Another three moths of cold maturing was done at the brewery, so we could be sure about the absolute quality before releasing to our customers.

On tap at Stone. Clear dark golden with almost no head. Really nice floral bourbon caramel and vanilla aroma. Thick silky creamy palate. Tastes of caramel, bourbon candy, orange, vanilla, and dry oak with a sticky sweet bourbon finish. Outstanding.

Bruine kleur, weinig schuim. Heeft een jaar in de kelder gelegen. Ruikt fantastisch, zoethout, drop, hoestdrank, wijn. Smaakt goddelijk, zacht, zoet, klein beetje bitter. Super!

330 ml bottle. Pours a deep garnet/ mahogany color with moderate head. Aromas of sweet malts, candi sugar, and dried dark fruit. Rich flavors of same with additional light anise and oak/vanilla. Rich and creamy. Typical de Struise greatness.

(on tap CBC) First beer on saturday; what a super blend of horse sweat, dirt, cherry kenel, some cidernotes and black berry leaves. Nice bronze color, small white head. Citric, woody and rustic finish, lingers for ions.

75cl bottle @ Midlands Beer Tasting, Aug 14 at Richie’s Hop Palace. Pours hazy orange with a thin head and big boozy Cointreau aroma. Taste is hugely complex, constantly evolving with sweet bourbon & vanilla mixing with dark fruits, malts, thick caramel & strong quad flavours. Without doubt the beer of the night for me and I definitely need a full bottle of this in my life. Incredible.

Collaboration between Struise Brouwers and Rychei Sugawa San of Rio Brewing, made in 2008. Vintage tasted a few years later. Off-white, stable head, colour hazy bronze. Very appealing, perfumey aroma of chocolate bars, candied figs, honey, marzipan, ginger, amaretto, sweet cider, gingerbread, orange peel, whisky... Very complex taste, candied orange in onset, sweet and spicy, on a rich and deep caramelly malt base, drying towards the finish and ending in a wonderful play of aromatic hops, dried fruits and warm, cognac-like, satisfying alcohol without becoming wry. Amazingly complex and well-balanced quadrupel, deserves no less than a four star rating, in my view not that far away from perfection.

Beerconnaiseur (166) - BELGIUM - JAN 27, 2015
Rio Reserva 2009 - there should be another listing as it’s incomparable with more recent batches, 75 cl bottles without cork or the latest 33cl bottles released 2014. Note to Ratebeer! ;) 75cl corked bottle of 2009. Pours dark orange reddish with great head (poured in crystal big wine glass : major difference than snifter). Aroma is all over the place! Vanilla, caramel, raisins and a certain softness in the combined aromas. Also some mellow whiskey in the nose, and taste. Full on flavour experience with beautiful esters developed over the last 6 years. Butterscotch caramels, raisin, wood, date, herbs, nuts, booze in aftertaste. All these flavours combined linger on. This is truly one of the best Struise beers that balances out over the years, gets less boozey and flavours more pronounced.
