Our brew-master was born and raised in Newport Belgium. In the early days around 1600, a lot of women were accused of witch craft and got burned alive... Early 2010, the city council of Newport asked Urbain to develop a session beer for the two yearly evocation of a Newport witch called Jeanne Panne. Jeanne was as ugly as can be and had copper coloured hair. Elements enough for Urbain to create a rather exciting ale whom we named "Roste Jeanne". The brand "Roste Jeanne" was deposed behind our backs by the city council early 2013. To avoid any legal battles, we stopped brewing the beer. This beer is now brewed in contract by the city council of Nieuwport at the Proefbrouwerij in Lo-christi Belgium.

Lovely clear deep amber color with a fine tan head that last and makes a fine lacing. Looks really great. Powerful and yet mellow aroma. Fruity, vinous, caramel and bready. Really delicious and inviting. Un expecting high carbonation. A bit fizzy mouth feeling. Medium to full body. On the sweet side and a moderate bitterness. Also an oily texture. Complex and tasty stuff. Changes a lot from the first to the last sip. Very vinous. Fruity and toffee. Bready and some spices. Nice evening sipper!

Bottle. Pours unclear brown in color with an off-white head. Dark fruityness mixed with little bit of spiced dark bready maltyness and notes of sweet syrup in aroma. A bit tart mouthfeel. Overripe plums and raisins, dark syrup and spicy vanilla notes in taste. A certain crunchy feeling in aftertaste. Bit of spicyness and bready maltyness in finish.

pours hazy almost cloudy light red showing some retention and lacing. very spicy and peppery yeastiness, toasted malts - some specialty, candi, faint fruitiness, minerals, hint of sweetness - plain brown sugar. lively to average carbonation, light body - almost watery, short semi-sweet peppery-spicy finish. clean and nicely belgiany done. overall an o-k brew.

Occasional ’witch beer’ for the Heksenfeesten of Nieuwpoort. Thinnish but stable, creamy, yellowish white head, pure bronze ’autumn’ colour. Gentle aroma of white port wine, liquorice, toasted bread, caramel sauce, cocoa powder, coriander, coffee, redcurrant, wodka. Delicate candi sweetness, candied fruits, caramel, toffee, resinous mouthfeel with ’dusty’ yeastiness and some warming, liqueurish alcohol, some cloying sweetness in the finish too with coffee powder-like roasted bitterishness and medium long leafy hop bitter. Again a Scotch-style ale in disguise.

Bottle at home. Pours rich ruby with big white head. Aromas of dried fruits, caramel, candy sugar, biscuit, berries, bread, yeasty funk. Taste is medium sweet and medium-light bitter, a dry bitter tinge to the finish. That Belgian yeast aroma is great and lingers nicely. Medium body, smooth, soft, bubbly mouthfeel. A tad of alcohol present. Lovely.
