4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 holdenn (2023) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 17, 2009
12 oz bottle thanks to pipeworks for this sample and their hand in this brew. Poured a hazed orange with a white soapy head. Nose of yeast, citrus, floral, herbal, and earthy notes that are abundant, fresh, and inviting. Herbal, citrus, earthy, and yeasty flavors that are juicy and delicious. Finishes dry with more of those herbal hops. Wow, this is tough to believe it’s 12% when it drinks like half that. I could easily drink a few of these. The dry bitterness of the hops balance the malt sweetness so well. Really tasty beer.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 JoeinEscazú (1324) - San Jose, COSTA RICA - APR 1, 2009
Bottle at Pre-ZBF. Golden color, faintly buttery-sour nose doesn’t sit quite right with dank, grassy hops. Light sweetness and rather extreme, dank, sticky bitterness. Interesting but not my speed.
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 bierkoning (8951) - La Tropica, NETHERLANDS - APR 1, 2009
Bottle @ home. Amber color, hazy. Citric but also yeasty aroma with vegetable notes. Biscuity malty sweetish, citric, yeasty alcoholic flavor, with notes of nutmeg. Walnut bitter aftertaste. I couldn’t get through the yeast, therefore disappointing.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DonMagi (5598) - bantervile, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - MAR 20, 2009
Bottle at alvinne, struise farm and at home and iv still got two somewhere. Alround rating: Biscuity grainy yet sweet malts, quite dry due to the alcohol, yeastyness is unusal and i cant figure out if its the yeast or something else that gives it the bitter orange peel taste. Im still completly undecided on this beer after about 9 samples, so will need to rerate it at some point.
4.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 harrisoni (10909) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - MAR 19, 2009
Bottle opened by Urbain at the Alvinne pre Zythos event 09. English yeast on aroma, biscuiy malt, stinging lasting hop on finish. It’s just the most stunning beer of the weekend. The English yeast from the Nottingham brewery, great biscuity malt, like Mcvities Digestive Biscuits, then a Cascade/Fuggles finish. This is just so awesome, I’m speechless. Glorious English style pale ale. Phenomenal. Ber beer I’ve had in so long. It was just that it tasted just like an English bitter, with that wide mouthfeel you would get fron a cask conditioned beer, but from a bottle, in Belgium and at 12% ABV. I was so blown away. I didn’t think Struise could get any better, but then they just go and do. Oh and it was brewed by those nice guys at Pipeworks. Hats off to all involved. It you wanted to make my definitive beer, this was it. Will age my bottles to let the faint diacetyl to go away and will then re-rate and possibly up the rating to a 5/5. So good I had 3 glasses of it on the go at the same time. The look on Mes from Mesandsim’s face must have mirrored mine. Sheer shock and awe.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 MiP (12136) - Sønderborg, DENMARK - MAR 15, 2009
Bottle, 12%. Good grassy hop aroma. Cloudy dark yellow colour. Small frothy white head. The flavour is quite hoppy, caramelly and grassy. Finishes more on the grassy side. There is a distinct sweetness, but it is balanced well by the alcohol.
