Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

UPDATED: MAY 21, 2014 Pours deep amber, decent head. Caramel, some toned down belgian yeast esters and some semi-sweet chocolate. Taste is very very smooth, no signs of the 10.5%, caramelly sweet, some oak quality, and faint dark fruits. It’s got really high drinkability for a quad though, and it’s quite flat. Secondary review; blind test with other top rated quads. Blind quad test against Pannepot, Pannepeut, Rochefort 10, St Bernardus 12,Westvleteren 12, The Sixth Glass, & Chimay Blue My prefered order was; Pannepot, Rochefort 10, St Amatus 12, Westvleteren 12, St Bernardus, Pannepeut, Sixth Glass and last Chimay. This is actually a lot like westvleteren, but sweeter and a bit vinous note, it is also a lot better carbonated than westvleteren, and has a sprucy refreshing taste which gives it a great drinkability, more hops, more oak, a bit less dark fruit, but for me, still more interesting.

Mahogany with creamy beige head. Nose and flavour of dark fruits, chocolate, caramel, oak and very yeastie. Smooth and bitter that leads to a rich malty finish. Delicious and yet delicate in all aspects. Very nice.

(Drinking date: 7 March 2014) (Vintage 2012) It is really black, no light comes through. No foam on it. Aroma of burned malt, liqorice, raisins and alcohol. The taste is good. A bitter, burned taste. But also a bit of sweetness. Bit of an alcoholic taste. The mouthfeel should have been thicker, stickier. The carbonation is good, not too much. Overall, I am enjoying this beer. But if you compare it to Westvleteren 12, I prefer the Westvleteren 12. But still, this is a really good beer! And that’s why it gets the total score of 7.9!

Aroma full of fruity esthers from yeast, with apple as the dominant aroma. Medium bodied, dark beer with minimal head. Beer is quite complex yet misses a distinct characteristic which for me makes it ok, but not great.

On bottle from Beerplanet.Be. Dark brown slightly reddish color, good foam. Aromas of malt, dried fruit, Madeira and oxidated aromas; medium/high aroma intesity. Medium/full body & high complexity. On the sweet side, but balances well. Very enjoyable

Pours a very dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma is malt, caramel, yeast, toffee, bread and woody notes. Taste is high sweet leading to a nice well rounded finish. Very good although I’d hoped for just a little better.

Drank a 2011 bottle with Thijs 14-2-2014. Good beer. Dark beer, little foam. Tastes like a barley wine. A bit alcohol taste. Rolo, chocolade, coffee also present. However, the taste is not overwhelming. Slightly watery, very lightly sour as well.
