Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Bottle: Deep, deep amber coloured with a ruby sheen, small, but stable off-white head; wood, wine and wanilla in the caramelly nose; solid sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied, but soft; port-wine (plus traces of alcohol) and dried fruits in the very solid sweet and bitter finish. A perfect winter-warmer…

Mortlach (1966) - Rome, ITALY - DEC 17, 2015
330ml bottle (vintage 2008) @Bir&Fud Bottega (Rome). Pours dark brown/mahogany, with a medium off-white head. Aroma of caramel, raisins, dried fruits, vanilla, brown sugar. Flavour is rich and complex, very sweet balanced with a decent bitter end. Full body, medium carbonation. A very good quadrupel!

Dark, hazy pour with almost no foam. Huge strawberry smell with faint traces of alcohol. Somewhat chick and creamy texture, tastes like strawberry and honey with a not-so-subtle alcohol finish.

Bottle from Trembling Madness, York. Hazy dark brown with ruby red highlights and a thin head of tan foam. It has a rich plum and currant flavour with earthy and spicy red fruity notes followed by a smooth oak finish. Excellent!

33cl, 2011 Vintage shared at Thanksgiving 2015. Ruby-shoesole brown pour, still well alive and even fizzy despite its age. Strong, rumtopfed fruit aroma of Schladerer Zwetschge, prune marmelade, cassonade and residual chocolate. Very dry and wood-matured mouthfeel, allowing prune essence more than sweetness to shine. Drinks pretty yeast-refined and consumate, at its estimated peak of 4 years - although I prefer some more mouthfeel from my Struise digestifs.

Bottle 0.33l at home, Nivala. Vintage 2013. BBE 9/2019. Colour is brown with small white head. Aromas and flavours: Fruits, dry fruits, raisins, some wood, dryness, some alcohol and malts.

Bottle - Vintage 2010 - Light caramel and lots of mellow raisin and a touch of booze. Deep Amber with a light beige head. Fig and prune with some toffee and sweetness. Carbonation is a bit up there.
