Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

On bottle from Beerplanet.Be. Dark brown slightly reddish color, good foam. Aromas of malt, dried fruit, Madeira and oxidated aromas; medium/high aroma intesity. Medium/full body & high complexity. On the sweet side, but balances well. Very enjoyable

Pours a very dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma is malt, caramel, yeast, toffee, bread and woody notes. Taste is high sweet leading to a nice well rounded finish. Very good although I’d hoped for just a little better.

Drank a 2011 bottle with Thijs 14-2-2014. Good beer. Dark beer, little foam. Tastes like a barley wine. A bit alcohol taste. Rolo, chocolade, coffee also present. However, the taste is not overwhelming. Slightly watery, very lightly sour as well.

Bottle. Pours a deep red color with a very fizzy brown-ish head. Aroma of malt, yeast and fruits. Taste is like the aroma but also has notes of molasses, spices, chocolate and oak. Very complex aftertaste. Full body and relative low carbonation once the initial amount has dissipated. Sweet goodness, it’s good. :-)

Shared 33 cl bottle. Pours a dark murky and hazy liquid with a small tan head. Nose is really sweet with raisins, molasses and prunes. Taste is as sweet as the nose. Lots of prunes, vanilla, syrup, chocolate, caramel and toffee. The high ABV is nowhere to be found, a bit to sweet but good anyways.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours dark reddish brown with a frothy goldenish beige head that lease a small lacing on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet, fruity, slightly estery and tiny phenolic with sweet dark bread, raisin bran, Christmas fruitcake, vanilla fudge, toffee, nose-tingling bourbon alcohol, caramelized apples, baked marzipan-covered pears, toasted almonds, toasted coconut, chocolate/marzipan/plum/brandy Anthon Berg chocolate cups, charred wood and hints of orange and lemon zest. Taste is sweet, very tiny bitter, very tiny sour, fruity, estery and phenolic with sweet dark bread, baked pears, ripe red apples, raisin bran, lemon zest, vanilla cake, warming bourbon alcohol, sweet sherry, charred wood, prunes, raisins, caramelized almonds, toffee and hints of lemon juice and marzipan. Mouthfeel is round, tiny boozy, soft, slightly fruity tart and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet, tiny bitter and tiny sour with sweet dark bread, grapefruit rinds, baked pears, apple skins, lemon zest, marzipan, charred wood, vanilla cake, lemon juice and hay. Splendid smell but the taste gets a bit too much after a while. Also a bit lacking in mouthfeel considering what kind of beer the smell promises.

Color caramelo limpido y muy oscuro con espuma beige que se desvanece rápidamente. Intenso aroma de caramelo y frutos rojos. En boca es dulce y muy afrutada con un regusto ligeramente ácido muy agrable. Excelente.

Pours a beautifully dark red-brownish colour with a beige creamy head. Wine-like aroma with sour and sweet fruits, cask and coffee. Taste gets dried and sweet fruits like plums, figs, grapes and cherries, coffee, liquorice, dark (!) chocolate/cacao, brown sugar, an alcoholic bourbon punch and a sour-bitterness that lasts. Low carbonation, dry mouth feel from the tannines/barrel but its body is too thin . Decent and complex, but a bit off-balance and too thinly bodied.
