COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Bottle@Home. Nice but pretty ’standard’ Belgian style Qualdrupel. I enjoyed it, but it was not exceptional nor interesting.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2010 Bottle from Urbain’s private stash. Nice aroma in the nose - gives decent head that dissipates quickly. Breads and vanilla. Flavor brings vanilla, esters - dry aftertaste, probably due to barrel aging. Nice beer.

At a tasting, thanks DSG, stable bubbly head, murky reddish brown colour, aroma of light roasted malt, coffee and bread, flavour of prunes, raisins and dark chocolate with a touch of bitterness in the back, a bit to sweet but still quite balanced. Very interesting.

Thanks to bmanning for this one. Shared with Amyliz4 and Azurelimits. Poured a dark brown with subtle mahogany hints. A slightly darkened white head with a decent amount of lacing. Large amount of dark fruit alongside some candied sugar and a bit of caramel. Initial sip brings a slightly-dry beer with some sweetness and dominated mostly by dark fruits. Body is medium. A good beer in its own right, but nowhere near the best of this style. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 09-17-2010

Bottle at a tasting. Muddy brown with a beige head. Aroma of malt, alcohol, raisins, a bit of prunes, caramel and light roasty notes. Sweet flavor with malt, bread, caramel, a bit of licorice, lots of dried fruits and a bit of sourness towards the finish. Nice full body. Good stuff.

Bottle, big thanks to Mes. The label looks just like you imagine a Quadrupel should, ’mon the Holy Belgians! Poured out a dense dark brown colour with a small yet lingering tan head. Nose was sweet and fruity with some yeast, chocolate and alcohol notes. Intricate flavour with sweet n sticky caramel, plus more dark fruit and spice lingered around the pulpit, hand in hand with a smooth and warming booze hit. Some hop bitterness to round things off nicely in the finish. A lovely drink to savour as the snow falls outside.

At a tasting, thanks DSG, pours brown hazy with a nice tan head, aroma of nuts, wood, dried plums and raisins, cherries and notes of chocolate, acidic flavor with chocolate, dried fruits, pretty bitter with alcohol warmth and a dominant spicy finish, zesty and almost full bodied. A nice brew

Bottle. Pours a hazy bruin body with a tan off white head and good retention. Aromatics are fruit toned esters, light plum, citrus, cots. Tobacco notes with a boozy undertone. Licorice, minerals, and etoh latent fruit tones. Strong etoh cherry notes, a hint of spicy yeast tones. Pretty good.

Bottle. Hazy brune pour with some light tan head. Dark fruit aroma with some sweetness showing through. Warmth shows through the full flavor of dark fruit, Belgian sugars, and yeast notes.

Bottle at home with Theis (thx). Pours a hazy red with a diminishing off-white head. Quite sweet with aromas of caramel and Belgian yeasts. Also hints of bread, alcohol and sweet pears. Slightly cloying. Full to medium bodied. Soft carbonation. Hints of abricot. Dry finish.
