Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

IMO better than it’s rating here. Pours a very murky medium brown with a fairly big light tan head (not as big as e.g. Rochefort 10) with minimum lacing. Aroma is very rich - excellent - with slightly roasty and nutty malt, yeast, spices (lots of them), dried prunes. Great stuff. Taste is equally rich if not as great as the aroma. Starts off a bit slow with a bit of bready malt and yeast, then builds up with alcohol, syrup and brown sugar, before a slightly hoppy finish. The bitterness is very balanced, and the sugar lasts through the finish. Palate is creamy and fairly rich, and very nice.

On draft. It pours a nice dark ruby color with a creamy khaki head. The aroma has some sweet hard candy and richer dark fruits. The flavor is toasty and alcoholic with some sweet dark fruit. Dates, plums, light notes of cherry. It has a thick body. I was hoping for more sweet fruity/yeasy complexity. But still a very good and refined quad.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown color with an average creamy off-white head that mostly lasted and produced fair lacing. Heavy complex cherry wood, chocolate and fruity aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Good complex sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Good complex brew.

A reddish amber quad with a thick creamy mocha head. In aroma, a sweet candi sugar, grassy and herbal, with smooth licorice and aniseed, alcohol. In mouth, a smooth sweet and vinous malt, with maple notes, vanilla, coriander, orange peels, loads of alcohol, rich and warming. On tap at Lord Hobo, Sept. 11 2011.

A hazy dark red/Brown beer with a nice crème coulered beer. Rough structured foam, drops slowly in. Aroma: Laulier, liquorice, spicy, malt, sweety and saisins The basic taste (scale from 1 to 5): sweet:2, sour:1, bitter:1. The aftertaste: sweet:2, sour:3, bitter:2. The laulier and the liquorice overruled in the end, als a taste from taninn. Not my kind of beer, but acceptable. Nice label

Cloudy brown colour. Very thick, oliy texture. Flavour is quite complex with some rich, dark fruits that leave a sticky sweetness on the lips. The finish is a touch more vinous with a hint of warming alcohol.
