Saint Amatus, also called St. Aimé, was a Benedictine monk.

He took the defense of the lesser man who was exploited by the Merovingian king Thierry III.

In Belgium, Oostvleteren is the only parish to patron St Amatus as saint.

Struise started brewing at Deca in Vleteren early 2006, we ankered ourselves by starting the development of our own micro brewery in Oostvleteren during 2009. With this adventure being on the rails, we thought the making of Saint Amatus 12 was as evident as can be.

The terrific artwork was brought by our narcissistic artist Carlo Grootaert.

Saint Amatus has aged on Woodford Reserve barrels from Labrot & Graham, Kentucky USA. Some batches were instead aged on Pappy Van Winkle whiskey barrels, both varieties are valid for this entry.

Bottle at home. It pours very dark brown, with a decent tan head. The nose is chocolate, dark fruit, toffee, caramel, coffee, fig and alcohol. The taste is dark chocolate, varnish, dark fruit (prune, raisin, currant and fig), wood, spice, toffee, vinous and alcohol warmth, with a dry-fruity finish. Medium to full body and moderate carbonation. Complex, well balanced and damn tasty.

Bottle at The Kernel Christmas Tasting 2011. Pours clear, amber-brown with a foamy, beige head. Dark, ripe fruit nose with rich caramel malts. Medium to big sweet flavor, lots of ripe fruits, some leather, grape and cherry, light leaves, fruit liqueur. Medium to big in body with fine carbonation. Light warmth in the finish, notes of brown sugar, raisin, dark sugar, lightly tangy and ripe fruits. Very good. Delicious. Well balanced.

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2012 2011 vintage. Black, thick body with a light bubly head. Definitely looks like a classic Belgium quadruple. Smells liek one too; dried sticky fruits with liquorice root, dough and rye bread, even chocolate notes and tabacco. Complex. Taste stars out with a delicate nutty bitterness but quickly becomes warming and sweet rich flavour. Develops in your mouth and burns a bit in the back of the throat. Okay, it’s not a Westvleteren 12 but I don’t think they want or need it to. Really has a character of its own - and lots of it. And I love it. (33cl bottle, 4,50 EUR) (Rating re-indexed)

Had the 2010 vintage out of a bottle with a good friend, tasted after Cuvée Delphine. More fruity than the Delphine, overall very good, very fond of Struise brewed stuff!

(11.2oz bottle courtesy of bobertkuekn. 2011 vintage). Pours a murky reddish-brown color with thin tan head. Aroma has dark fruit (dates and figs), caramel and some wood. Taste is semi-sweet with some light bitterness. Caramel, dark fruits and some vanilla come through. Medium bodied with an oily texture. A little rough around the edges, but a good quad.

Pours muddy brown with a medium head. Light aroma is alcohol and sour malts. Flavor is very soft, mostly sweet malts with some alcohol. Not quite your average barley wine. I like it.

2010 vintage 33cl bottle, picked up for 6 euros, pours murky brackish amber brown with dark tan head. The aroma emits raisins, dates, chocolate covered cherries and some yeasty spices. A bigger pull brings up the expected booziness. The flavor is rich as it should be for the style and I’m really enjoying it. I begins with brown sugar covered raisins and prunes and then it moves toward cherries and earthy dates. By midway an amazing chocolate note rises to the surface and takes this into wonderful places just as you noticed the formidable ABV. Around the edges, joining the bit of booziness are thin rings of yeasty spiciness that liven up the more rich sweet notes. This is bold and rich in all the right places.
